Old Spindles Which bearings

Been renovating some old school cast iron spindle units.  The upper bearing were in good shape but I was planning on replacing except all I could get new was made in China.  (These are the older shafts and the bearings are odd 3/4" ID 40mm OD.  Later WH units used more common 17mm ID 40mm OD)

So I opened up the bearings and some other used ones I had accumulated and a new China bearing.

Interesting differences

From left to right  Pacamor (Japan) steel ball carrier 9 balls    General bearing company plastic carrier 8 balls  (No origin marked)     Nice (USA)  plastic carrier 8 balls    HBC (China) (New) steel carrier 8 balls

So what bearings to use????

Since eh old spindles have grease fittings into the housing I guess i should leave off the inner cover??

I believe the open sides face the center, the seals to the outsides.

I vote Japan. More balls = less wear.

@pfrederi   see the OPPORTUNITY ?  its not the bearing its the wrong / generic  lubrication in them ! wide rubber side grease shields , is the saving grace !  every bearing failure I  have had  was ELIMINATED ,WITH A CLEAN OUT, AND LUCAS  XTRA HD GREEN CHASSIS GREASE , WAL MART $ 8 , ALL MY MOWER DECKS , AND RELATED DRIVE POINTS , operate quietly  , easily , no WHYINING , rate at 550 deg flash point , polyurea  rated , personally buy  bearings on one  standard , wide rubber side shields . no noise or failures . staring right at you  , pete

Back at work we had large hydraulic pumps. The electric motor shared a bearing with the hydraulic pump where they bolted together. The bearings had one more ball than a common bearing. This gave the bearing a higher load rating. Those bearings cost a lot more than the standard bearing.

More load bearing surface. Doesn't seem to be flawed logic...............

Actually I was making fun of being 55 years old looking back at stupid stuff I've done...

My grandpa's logic: the level of balls is in direct and oppositional correlation with the limit of brains....
