k301 not firing

ok I'm new to these and first time really working on small engines. i have a k301 engine. i ordered the tune up kit with new coil, condenser, and points. after installed it won't fire. it turns over that's it. I made sure everything is grounded and the points have proper gap . 20. i have voltage at the coil i have spark at the points. i took the plug out that has spark. I'm not sure what else to do I'm about to start putting old parts back on and see if that changes anything. it did run before hand pretty well actually besides an occasion sputter or hiccup.

No fuel?...   to test, spray just a little bit of starting fluid directly into the carb, while craking the engine.  If it fires, then you have a fuel problem...maybe needle seat valve in the carb....may bad fuel pump...maybe plugged fuel line...maybe fuel shuit ff valve is closed...

This old philosophy comes to mind. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". An occasional sputter or hiccup seems normal on these higher hour old engines. Backfires are no good.

I agree with daveoman. Since spark has been verified, try squirting some fuel or flammable spray like carb or brake cleaner into it should verify the problem. If it fires, it's fuel related. If it doesn't check spark again.

You did not mention anything about cleaning the carb, was that done as well?

You have spark so the new components are working. The question is, do you have spark at the right time? The points gap changes your ignition timing and it doesn't have to be too far off to prevent the engine from starting.

Static timing is the preferred method for adjusting your points. Follow the steps in this video.

:text-welcomeconfetti:to the forum.  You have tapped into an immense amount of Wheel Horse knowledge here.  I'm of the opinion that the between all of the folks on this forum, we have broken and fixed anything that can be broken and fixed on a Wheel Horse.  We are all willing to give advice - some of it is actually helpful!

 

Don't use starting fluid on these old small engines.  Starting fluid is energetic enough that it can sometimes damage the engine.

 

Like @wallfish recommends- use brake cleaner, carb cleaner, or even a small shot of gas for testing or encouraging a reluctant start.

Put the old plug back in an test again.  Plugs will sometimes appear to spark lying on the head but will fail to fire when installed and under compression

ok update, ended up putting old carb on after taking apart the bowl on the new one. turns out the internals where all broken sitting in the bowl. Started with a few sprays of starter fluid. tractor ran great for about 30 ish minutes ran outta fuel. refilled the gas and refused to start and pouring black smoke out the exhaust.

Black smoke indicates too much gas (rich).

Bob's right. When it ran dry the float probably dropped down farther than normal and didn't re-seat when the bowl filled again...Nothing stopping fuel from flooding the carb. :dunno:

      I am in need of help. While doing yard work with my K301 powered ‘68 Charger 12 it suddenly came to a stop and won’t start again. 

      My troubleshooting so far: 
       
      Fuel:
      • stabil/87 and clean
      • good flow before and after pump
      • carb clean, recently rebuilt, float level correctly set 
       
      Compression:
      •good? - blows finger off spark plug hole
      •good turnover but doesn’t fire off
      •piston and cylinders move freely
      •valve lash set .008 intake .018 exhaust
      •breather assembly correct and recently serviced with new gaskets and filter
      •head gasket not broken, head bolts tight, some carbon on head
       
      Spark:
      •no spark
      •all electrical/ignition components were replaced 1 year ago except voltage regulator
      •no loose connections, no grounding connections
      •inspected and applied graphite to starter shaft
      •changed plug
      •12v to coil good
      •cleaned points, points wire has continuity
      •condenser ground good
      •swapped battery, points and wire, plug and wire, coil, and condenser from running K301 (‘69 Charger 12)
      •points push rod does push out when turning engine over by hand, but unable to get points timed using multimeter method and timing mark on flywheel
       
      What else should I check/do?

      Hi. I have a C121 which starts right up but lacks power. A compression check indicated 30lbs of pressure. I took the head off hoping maybe it’s just a gasket, but I think the cylinder needs to be honed or bored out. Based on the attached pics, is this block still good and would honing fix it?

      So gang, it's Christmas time and my company has extended its forced vacation to two weeks, sucking 7 days of FTO from me. I've got all kinds of things to do for the wifey-poo but what the heck can I do for me?
      I've got two K301s so may as well get out the surgical tools and do a b-gearectomy. The C-125 goes first. Restored that back in '17 and so she's got maybe 75 hours on her. It'll be rather painless and the youngster is visiting so can assist in getting that b-itch up onto the bench. She's already been moved to the garage and the old Kawi and its carb parts moved back to the shed while I search for tiny o-rings. Wish me luck and pics to come. Oh, there is no rattle BUT she's always had a minor knock I chalk-up to excessive end play (didn't measure it back then 'cause I'm bad but, dang!, will now).

      I put together a replacement for the missing clutch handle today.  I like it so much I'm going to make one for my C-175 also!
       
      Now I need to figure out how come it's not staying DISengaged.  It EASILY jumps off the detent at the slightest touch.  It appears to be a new bracket / lever, judging from the paint on it, but I have not investigated further yet.  Wonder if anyone has run into this and solved it?
       

       
      What is the correct routing for the throttle cable?  This just CAN'T be correct!  It's right on the cooling fins of the engine, it's done melted the skin off the cable!  Maybe it's a replacement cable and simply too short?
      If someone could post a pic of the correct routing it would be much appreciated!
       

       
      While looking that over I noticed some oil 'weepage' at the front of the engine.  To me it appears to be concentrated right under the fuel pump.  I presume there's a gasket there that may need to be refreshed?
       

       

       
      The only other suspect is the valve cover but and that appears to be a little weepy too, but  more so the fuel pump.
