I've had an engine that hasn't been "run" in years - I take the plug out and work some oil on the cylinder walls and valves/guides turning the engine by hand  - after 25 years its dry on the top…Marvel - WD-40 or similar

Agreed. Might make it smoke for a minute or three, but it's never good to start one with dry internal components...

Nice looking machine - just a FYI - anytime I've had an engine that hasn't been "run" in years - I take the plug out and work some oil on the cylinder walls and valves/guides turning the engine by hand  - after 25 years its dry on the top…Marvel - WD-40 or similar

WD-40 is not a lubricant. It's a water repellent. PB-blaster, Kroil, Liquid Wrench, Deep Creep are all better choices.

If possible, flip an engine over for one or two seconds so everything gets a splash of oil.  Let it drain down for a few hours before attempting a start.

@Curtis H I’m wondering what ever became of this tractor? I realize he’s not on here anymore but maybe someone knows what happened with it? Definitely one of the nicest C-165’s I’ve ever seen.

@Brockport Bill As you can see this guy made this one post and then never responded or posted an update. I know it’s a long shot but figured I’d revive this thread and see if anyone knew what happened with it? I don’t think @stevebo ended up it ?

there are some contridictions looking at photos -- i have a 1980 c165-8 -- and the color in certain places do not match my tractor -- my pto pulley is red - this posted photo its black ---  the trangular shape bracket that holds the pto lever arm doesn't match my pto brake bracket which is red - my pto arm and the trunion are not the shiny color as the shiny color silver in these photos - the hardware on this tractors seat platform connecting to the seat pan fender look almost brand new bolt heads -- there are inconsistances -- which may mean different manufacturing years???? Buit my i.d. decal indicates mine is a 1980 and the poster says this a 1980 -- but different things do not match.

anyone have any thoughts if this posted tractor is all original, or maybe restored?

It's definitely not Bill ... lots of little telltales that it isn't but it's a mute point. Whatever was done is very tasteful. Definitely not like one of EB's franken horses. :ychain: Reminds me of that C-85 I think it was that Mike @Sparky picked up awhile back.

Now that @Brockport Bill has got me wondering how many years the C-165 8-Speed was produced, I had to go to one of my Straight From The Horses Mouth books and look it up. It shows 1980,81 not in 82,83 but then again in 84. I thought they were only produced in 80,81. In 82 16hp 8 Speed offered was the SK-486, or the Work Horse GT-1642. In 83 only the GT-1642 was offered. I find it odd that the C-165 8-Speed was available again in 84.
I believe the tractor in the picture is original and not restored. The only thing I see is what appears to be not original seat pan bolts? I know, getting picky, right?!! One of the first things I look for when someone says all original is the carriage bolts that hold the battery tray in place. Many times people will paint over them, they did not come from the factory painted.
Whatever happened to this tractor, I hope it ended up in the right hands. As I said earlier, it’s not too often that you see one in that condition. I’m sure that many of us here would love to add it to their collection.

PTO brake would not have been silver either Don. Other hardware doesn't appear to be original either and no grunge at all around the motor. I think it was cleaned up, some stuff changed up, used for mowing a couple times and put away dry.

Got that right ... I'd add that to my harem in a NY second and I'm not a huge B Hood fan like Sylvia.

:confusion-confused:             Once it got covered with mud you would never know!            image.jpeg.534498467062784d4c1f714846a1b098.jpeg     Sherlock Holmes is on the case.

Not sure why that double posted? I tried to make a new post and it wouldn’t let me? Anyway, @WHX?? I did notice the PTO brake but didn’t say anything because I wasn’t quite sure. Now that I look at it again and hear it from you I’d agree!

This discussion reminds me of a rather animated discussion I overheard in the concourse area at a Buick GS meet.  The subject was over the proper windshield washer hose stripe color - white or yellow.

My thought at the time was the proper color is whatever washer hose was loaded on the assembly line 5 decades ago the day that car was built.  Got to remember that the car in question was just another job of 50 or 60 per hour running down the assembly line that day.  It didn't get 'special' until it was delivered to the customer.

That being said, the tractor being discussed is really nice.  Would be interesting to find out what happened to it.

agreed, tractor looks terrific --- i just held up photos from my phone of my C165-8 next to these posted c165 photos and compared - - that's when i noticed different comparisons. What i did was look at the posted photos on my phone so i could use my phones zoom feature and check some features close up. ----- One feature on the psoted photos i noticed is on most Blackhoods the side of the middle section of the hoodstand tends to have a more orange tint which this posted photo does seem to have.
