Also, any tips for disassembling the transaxle?

Agreeing with @953 nut that the likeliest place to look is in the differential or right axle, though I’m still puzzled that you can turn the right hub and affect the left but not turn the left and affect the right.

At this point, it I think it less likely to be in the hydro itself so I would not open any of the hydro pump or motor at this point.

@mrc’s point about dirt is well made. The transaxle is the “tank” for the hydro--the same oil circulates through the pump, motor, and transaxle. Keeping the innards free of any contamination is extremely important. The Eaton 11 Service Manual is a good pre-read before getting into @19richie66's terrific tutorial.

Also, if you haven’t replaced the hydro filter in a while, I’d plan on a new one after this job, in addition to new gaskets!

Possibly this keyway or it could have sheared off some teeth on that gear and it’s not making contact with the drive gear off the pump.

Still confused that turning the left hub turns the brake drum--seems to imply that diff and intermediate gears are all working. Maybe a sheared key with enough residual friction to turn the drum but not enough to drive the machine?

Okay, thanks for the advice. I have a tractor mechanic coming over tomorrow to take a closer look and I’ll share the advice you guys gave me.

I’ll post an update on what he thinks and potential next steps

Hello again, coming back to this project after a while.

I want to update some info about this problem. I removed the pump housing so I can see the two gears (27 and 28).

When I spin the left hub it spins 28 and 27, but not the right hub. Vice versa. And spinning the gear 28 spins both hubs - forward or back. Gear 27 just rotates freely it seems but also rotates when gear 28 rotates. Neither gear looks to have any damaged teeth. The hubs can spin in opposite directions but neither 27/28 rotate when the wheels are spinning in opposite directions. Spinning the hubs in the same direction rotates 27/28, also.

On the pump housing, gear 2 (output shaft gear) rotates freely and so does the input shaft.

Are there other tests I do to isolate either the transaxle or the pump?

Update on this..

I disassembled the pump housing to check if the control shaft dowel pin was broken or if there was any other issue I could find. Everything about the pump seemed just fine. No scoring and the pump and motor rotor assemblies rotated freely.

Here’s some photos for posterity.

I guess at this point my best bet is just to open the transaxle and check the gearing. Although getting the hubs off sounds like a pain since I don’t have a hub puller on hand.

I hope you had the Eaton manual for servicing that. One thing I remember being emphasized was that the balls are NOT interchangeable--they are fitted to the specific sockets in both pump and motor side.

Hello, yes I used this manual.

I will need to re-open it as I got some more advice that I should have checked the check/relief/acceleration valves as it sounds like that could very well be the problem.

Any thoughts on the axle behavior? I’m really dreading trying to get the hubs off to open the case
