Another wonderful weekend !

This past weekend was our annual trip to Owl's Head Transportation Museum just outside of Rockland Maine.  

 

The campground we stayed at was Sennebec Lake Campground in Appleton. We were... Impressed. 

Neither Trina and I are normally into retail type paid campgrounds. This one, an exception. Very good service from helpful owners. The maintenance guy as well. 

Friendly fellow campers were more than happy to help transport one of our group that had an injured ankle around the grounds.

Absolutely excellent show. Cloudy weather but good showing. 

Lots of kids FASCINATED with the tractors.  

I like to see younger people enjoying machinery and I hope they learn to be even more involved in the future. 

We had several families bringing the little ones over and setting them on both of our tractors.  

 

I had a unique opportunity and met some great folks today. 

Older fella and his friends and family from Florida originally were showing a Peterbilt with a moving truck trailer up here in Maine.  

 

 

He'd actually used a WHEELHORSE in his moving business many years ago!!

The tractor was connected to a 4 x 4 trailer that he'd hitch up to go UNDER the skyscrapers in Boston back when he didn't have a truck that would fit.  

The group was showing a 1911((??)) Mack truck there at the museum and they needed some things moved from where we were unloading our own trailer over to the new hanger/workshop building. 
I said, toss it all in the trailer after the Wheelhorses are out and I'll bring it over. 
I'll bet the Ole fella thanked us at least 8 times throughout the day.  
Great people.  

 

 

This particular rig is a 3/4 scale Pete on an F350 chassis. 

 

The engine is a Cummins from a Dodge. Started out life at 160 HP. It was rebuilt and built up to 300 HP. Transmission is a 13 speed commercial truck manual.  

The cab and doors are from a Peterbilt. Shaved down to proper scale. The rest of the body parts are all hand made.  

 

This was a real worker!!

 

It went over 160,000 miles pulling small equipment and specialty loads around the country.  

It was partially retired awhile back and relegated to tugging the John Deere behind it.

This Walter is the only one I've ever seen as a fifth wheel tractor. The trailer was 10 ft wide in its daily usage heyday. 

 

This Owls Head Museum's own Wheelhorse.  

 

 

This coal truck was vintage around 1905, 1910. It was used for 15 or 20 years then parked because the business's model changed a bit. After a good many decades of setting in a warehouse on a pier there were a fair amount of folks wanting to aquire it. Unfortunately the pier itself had gone soft and no one dared touch for another 2 or 3 decades. A rescue plan was put together. 

This is exactly how it looked when it was finally saved.

Beautiful truck. No chain drive here. Those highway rigs are all great drives.

A number of years ago, there was an air show in Kansas City.  We had other business that took us into the city that day.  We saw a Folker DR 1 flying by.  

 

There are not that many that are operational.  I wonder if it is the same one?

I'll have to double check with the museum. 

They mentioned that the one the have is the only one that  flies ..

But only "what" I don't remember.

I have been to Rhinebeck a couple of times, they put on a corny show flying the old planes, I even took the ride in a bi-plane.  If you ever are in the northeast, a visit to Rhinebeck will be memorable.
