Recommended Posts

Ed Kennell

Finally!!!   This is the first buck I have seen on my trail cam since July.     Maybe some biguns will start to show up.  Archery season opens on Sept 30.

Another small one showed last      Not quite legal in PeeAaaa.  So he should survive and may be nice next year.

My Uncle and his buddy put up another camera last weekend, while putting the canvas on their buck hut blinds.  This is on the edge of my 6 acre grassland that I am improving, and our 100 acre crop field.  First daytime buck pic I’ve seen this fall!

Crossbow kill on Oct 18 on my property in So. Michigan. I’m allowed a second buck or doe so I am looking for his big brother.

Uhh, I think you got the big brother.     Very nice 10.   Congrats.

Here's the little brother I took with the Xbow yesterday.

I took a walk around a small 8 acre wood lot that I used to hunt and found this smoking hot scrape.  It stunk so bad that I smelled it 20 yards away.   We only get one buck tag here in Pa. and I used mine on that small eight last week.    So I hung a camera just to see if I can ID him for next year.

I checked the trail cam that I put on the scrape.    As I expected, the buck is there at night.    I can see this corner of the woods from the house and never see him in the daylight.

The camera time is 12 hours off.   He was there at 8:13PM.    This is the 5 point I passed up early in the bow season.  The coon and fox are also interested in the stinky scrape.

No internet very little phone and no workin on @953 nut s project. Sorry Richard but like a good dog she'll be waiting for me when I get back.

Haven't seen much as far as horns go up there but won't be for lack of trying.

:angry-tappingfoot:                Well, we have about seven months til the Big Show so I suppose we will let you get by this time but don't get lost in the woods and foregit your way home.         :ychain:       Enjoy the safari.

Well boys you guys know I am on safari for the nine day WI gun hunt.

Scored opening afternoon on a three point scrub buck so tagged out with a firearm. Can't eat them horns and tag needs to boiled for hours to eat.

May go sit with the bow if Cindy tags out.

Guiding Cindy to some nice bucks we have been seeing but no dice so far. Weather has just been too mild and animals not moving. Could use a little tracking dust.

Pics when we get back to civilization.

I picked up my processed venison from the butcher shop and got it organized and stored in the freezer.

35 lb of sweet bologna

10 lb of dried chipped venison

Added to the 32 lb of ground meat and 27 lb of roasts, steak and back strap that I processed.

Not bad, over 100 lb of meat from that one deer.

Not sure I can use another one, but there is always the food bank.

That's unbelievable Ed. Average whitetail here goes 110 gutted and yields 40 lbs of boned meat. That includes back straps, steaks and such. I usually don't do roasts. Not enough left for hot sticks.

Sounds like your butcher does a 50/50 mix.

Need to.take a doe to try the bacon thing with ground.

A trophy for a youngster is a doe, spike or anything.

Sounds like your butcher does a 50/50 mix.    Not really,  All  rib meat and trimmings go for bologna.  He adds a small amount of beef fat.

Need to.take a doe to try the bacon thing with ground.    I added 5 lb of bacon to get the 32lb of bacon burger.

I'm always surprised by the shrinkage of the dried chipped meat.    A 25 lb hind quarter yields 10 lb of dried meat.

Ave deer weight in Pa.

Mature buck     150 -300      The antler restrictions now pretty much assure all bucks are at least 3 year olds.

Mature doe       100-200

I don't have a scale to weigh a hanging deer, but I do weigh all the boned meat.

Interesting chart

This 2023 archery buck was taken this year near East Berlin, Pa.    Just 20 mile from the Big Show.

He was just  scored and is 3/8" short of the state record. No photo description available.

What a monster!  To be that short of the record would be a bummer but still awesome to harvest of course.  I'd be shaking for days if I took something like that :D
