Snoopy11 5,718 #1 Posted August 19, 2022 (edited) Hey guys, So... I am going to go Greenfield Indiana tomorrow, and I see an engine for sale... 35$ Take a look: Description from seller: Rare find here. A cast iron Tecumseh engine that could be off a Sears Suburban or Wheelhorse tractor. Missing carburetor and air filter housing. Has good compression. I think it's a 12 H.P., but i know 1 thing, this bad boy is very heavy. Comes with the hard to find solid state ignition. Thanks for looking. I'm on the fence whether this engine is worth my time... whatchya guys think? Should I go for it since I'm going up there anyway tomorrow, or should I pass on it? Secondly, should I rebuild or part it out? Don Edited August 19, 2022 by Snoopy11
Snoopy11 5,718 #2 Posted August 19, 2022 By the way, my research indicates that this is a hh120-120159D... (at least... that's what I think it is)... Don

Darb1964 1,113 #5 Posted August 19, 2022 Looking at it again, I don't think snow blower because of the starter set up. Personally I'd pass, the cast iron motors were good a long time ago. Finding parts may be a challenge. In my opinion scrap or anchor.

I left a message for the seller... if they get back to me... I will offer them a low ball... only since the engine is only 10 minutes from my original destination. Who knows, since it's been for sale so long... maybe they will just throw it at me... Don
Darb1964 1,113 #7 Posted August 19, 2022 (edited) Never know, could be a fun project, if it's something you're not counting on. If that guy can throw that bad boy, don't make him mad. Edited August 19, 2022 by Darb1964

Snoopy11 5,718 #9 Posted August 19, 2022 Well, I seriously doubt I am going to pick up this engine tomorrow... as the seller won't answer their phone. So... since I can't pick up the engine... I really did spend the 35$ on dinner... Don

I am going to pick up this engine tomorrow after all. The seller called... very nice man. Having hernia issues so he can't help lift it... but after I told him that I spent my 35$ on fried chicken and biscuits... he did lower the price quite a bit (not really, he just wants it off his hands). @davem1111 another CL listing slayed! I've bought tractors & parts that I really didn't need or want just because they were such great people. I've met some great people over the years, just another perk of russlin' that I look forward to.

I went to pick the engine up today... and I learned that the guy selling the engine was a member of the forum and had a Wheel Horse. I told him my "handle" on the forum @Snoopy11... and he knew exactly who I was... said quite a few kind words... because of that he threw in this running Lawn Boy for free (the push handle is off to the side). Mr. Turkey performing his usual inspection on all new equipment... I am going to be needing some help with both of these items, getting them running properly again so I will be creating threads for both of them when I get to them. Snoopy11 5,718 #15 Posted August 20, 2022 The guy who I bought the engine from didn't tell me his forum "handle" at first, then he made me promise for whatever reason that I would keep it to myself. He isn't one of the main characters on the forum... (I didn't even know who he was) but he told me that he has lurked in the shadows for a long while. Very nice older gentleman. Basically, he is in retirement, and works on machines here and there.... but he doesn't have energy for much work on his machines due to some medical conditions. He really respects the fact that a younger guy is interested in old machines and engines. I pretty much told him to be careful with strangers coming to his home... not everyone are upstanding people. He said that he knows that it is becoming more and more dangerous as he gets older, and because of his age and crime in the area, this is his last year selling. He only has a couple of push mowers left... and once they are gone... he is going to retire from his hobby... Truly saddens me that the older generation is slowly melting away. Heatingman 971 #18 Posted August 21, 2022 Bought a john deere garden tractor many years ago that had hydraulic lift for the mowing deck. Had dreams of putting a plow on it. Got so frustrated with that solid state ignition set up pick up coil arrangement that I converted it to HEI like GM use to use. Then after I had it running, realized the whole motor was a basket case. Something with the valve timing. Did not have the desire to do an entire rebuild, and got rid of the entire machine.
