Jerry Ohmer 1 #1 Posted August 18, 2022 (edited) Classic GT Will not start. Replace the starter solenoid. Still just clicks when trying to start it. im guessing a safety switch is to blame. squonk 39,126 #2 Posted August 18, 2022 (edited) If your solenoid is actually clicking it's not a safety switch. A bad switch would prevent the solenoid from clicking. Sounds like the starter. Do you have a voltmeter? Handy Don 10,744 #4 Posted August 18, 2022 This could be as simple as a poor electrical connection. Components don't fail often, but the connections do, Are all the connections in the start circuit clean and tight? If the solenoid is clicking, but the starter isn't turning the likeliest situation is not enough juice to the starter. Start with the battery connections and the negative to ground connection. You replaced the solenoid so you cleaned and tightened all of those, right? (If not, you don't lose your turn but you must go back two spaces and roll again. ) The demystification guide has trouble-shooting sequences. You will need a test lamp, or, even better, a trusted volt-ohm meter and some wire for jumpers. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
953 nut 52,170 #5 Posted August 18, 2022 The first thing you should do with any electrical problem is take the battery to an auto parts store and have it load tested. Once you have a confirmed good battery in the tractor and ALL connections including grounds cleaned and tightened. Take a 12 volt test light or volt meter set at 20 volts DC, attach the negative lead to your battery ground point and touch the positive probe to the battery positive terminal to see that it is working. Now move the probe to the solenoid battery side and activate the starter switch, if there is a click but the light/voltage reduces greatly or goes away you have a bad cable from the battery to the starter. If there is no click take a small jumper wire from the "+" battery post to the small terminal on the solenoid that goes to the ignition switch, this should close the solenoid and you can observe the voltage as previously mentioned. Presuming the light/voltage test was satisfactory move the probe to the starter side of the solenoid and repeat, if the solenoid closes but the light/voltage reduces greatly or goes away you have a bad solenoid. Presuming this test was satisfactory move the probe to the starter end of the cable from the solenoid and repeat, if the solenoid closes but the light/voltage reduces greatly or goes away you have a bad solenoid to starter cable. If this test was also satisfactory but the starter didn't turn over take a good quality automotive jumper cable and connect one end of the black wire to the engine and the other end to the battery negative terminal and try again. If the starter turns over the ground cable is bad. If that didn't do the trick then connect one end of the red jumper cable to the starter and touch the other end to the battery positive terminal to test the starter itself. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
