indicators of a failing fuel pump

Recommended Posts

cod

35 year old fuel pump on my 418. So far it starts right up with a minimal amount of cranking. If the pump starts to go have any of you noticed how it was acting prior to failure? When it goes, I'll switch to one of the electric pump setups and probably a primer bulb as well.

Thanks!

If you think you are having a problem with the pump, why wait until it fails? Replace it now. Also, why would you need a primer with an electric pump?

I agree with @rmaynard - if you go with an electric pump, no primer is needed. A word of caution - when (not if) the diaphgram fails, it will dump raw gasoline into the crankcase - diluting the oil to a point where BAD things happen - time to go ...

Thanks guys. Never occurred to me that the bulb would be unnecessary and not thrilled with the idea that it would gas into the crankcase.

Time to revisit some of the electric pumps threads.

@RED-Z06https://www.amazon.com/CarBole-Universal-2-3-5P-S-I-Operating-Self-Priming/dp/B01IR6BNKY/ref=sr_1_3?,  been using this a couple of years now , very quiet and reliable , this is the low pressure type you want . also added a fuel check valve to this just before carb , very good , pete

@RED-Z06 https://www.amazon.com/EVIL-ENERGY-Return-Petrol-Aluminium/dp/B08JJ128LN?th=1  have this mounted just afrer fuel pump discharge , just VERTICALLY before carb , for instant fuel holding charge . lots of hours , instant starts , no issues , pete

I put one of these on my 312 and loved it for about 10 hours of use then it shut down, pump wasnt pumping and my discharge side has plastic in it (not the inlet) so something came apart inside. Hooked up my old manual pump and went back to work.  I put one of the metal solenoid style pumps on my generator and its been great, just chatters but thats the nature of them.

Eh, it wasnt too bad, spent more time mounting and wiring it cleanly to switched power than i did removing it, but I was thankful the mechanical pump was there or id have been pushing about 1/4 mile home.
