Kohler SH255 Engine

Recommended Posts

Mornin' guys!

Later today, I'm going to see a used CountyLine log splitter available nearby that has a Kohler SH255 engine.  I've seen the brochure on the Kohler web site, and just wondering if you guys have any real-world information on this engine.

WHX??

Buddy of mine has a CL/TSC splitter with that motor on it and has no problems but he bought his new and takes care of his crap. He might have a SH265 motor which is 6.5 HP. Thinkin both the 25 and 30 ton had that motor.  What is the tonnage of the splitter you are looking at? I would say you can't go wrong if it saw regular oil changes, air filter etc.

Thanks Jim, that's kind of generally what I'm thinking.  This is a 25 ton machine, a slightly older version of the one that's now for sale at TSC.  The engine is rated at 5.5 horsepower, versus the 6.5 on the newer one.  The torque specs are very close, I don't think I'll ever notice a difference.  Like you said, it all depends on how well it was maintained, I'll at least check the oil and A/F when I see it, depends on what I can get away with.

Yes if the oil is pitch black that might be a haggling point.

Most splitter manufacturers don't put higher end motors of course to keep the cost down. You'll rarely find a motor with a iron sleeve on a factory splitter unless you get over the 2K price range. Motors seem to wear out faster on them then any other machine for some reason.

So as it turns out, the engine is actually the 6.5 HP version.  I was going by an auction listing for this same splitter model, which said 5.5 HP and was apparently wrong.  The oil was clean, maybe overfull, and the air filter looked good.  I didn't get to hear it run, but the owner says the splitter hasn't seen more than 20 hours or so since he bought it new back in 2020 during "World War C".  It's possible it hasn't even seen its first oil change, I'm not concerned since that's one of the first things I'll plan to do if I buy it.

According to Kohler, this engine is an OHV design and does have a cast iron cylinder liner.
