It happens about one hour after the operator decides to abuse it by having the air screen clogged, the engine fins clogged or the oil filter grommet removed.  People can break an anvil.  A properly maintained Onan will last thousands of hours.

Except for generators and welders , this is my first experience with the Onan and just wanting to get a feel for what to expect from it ... Goes without saying ( for most of us ) that running any air cooled engine without proper air flow is gonna destroy it in short order ... But the oil filter grommet ?? Not sure what you're referring to ...

I have seen them go over 3000 hours and I had one on 520 at 2500, It rattled a little but no other issues.

Lynn hit the nail on the head with cooling.

There is supposed to be a rubber seal at the oil filter area of the engine tin. Belt guard modifications to increase airflow are an option. They also help with checking on debris buildup on the rear fins.

Make sure the bolts around the PTO side of the crankshaft are tight. I had one where they loosened up and started dumping oil everywhere.
