I am probably going to take some heat for this question.  Already embarrassed.  Might even be related to a senior moment.

1990 416-8 42 in deck.

Remember...... might be a senior moment.

1.I get on

2. Depress clutch and brake

3. Pull out throttle

4. Adjust idle

5. Starts

6. Select gear

7. Engage pto.

Blades are spinning and belt looks good.

It's not cutting grass at all.

What am I doing wrong?

Correct rotation of the blades?

PTO to deck belt comes off the top of the PTO over the "V" pulley on the mule and under to the left side of the top deck pulley. Off the deck pulley to the "U" pulley on the mule and up to to the bottom of the PTO.

The other possibility is a sheared key in the deck drive spindle--the blades would spin but with no power to cut grass. You'd see/hear/feel the blades stop when they hit high grass.

@SRW1263

Do you have the deck low enough to cut?

Sounds like this is your first mow of the season?

There is a black rod on the left. Pull back, depress button with your thumb and release to lower deck.

Pictures help us a lot. (Plus we all like pictures! )

Thanks for the response.  Going to take deck off tomorrow and put back on.

When trying to cut I do not hear or feel any noted difference.

Also it seems to me the deck is sitting high. Will take pictures in a bit

First time I had it out this year. Ran fine last year.

Definitely would recheck the mounting to the tractor when you drop/remount.

Grab a picture or three before you take it off, just for yucks. It might be something simple!

(1) Is the deck mounted properly?  See the fork in tthis schematic...that is critical.

(2) Proper tension on the PTO belt to deck...should deflect about 1/2" to 3/4" midway of PTO to Front Mule drive.

(3) Check the FLOATING deck flat bar with the idler pulley on it...This flat bar MUST FOLAT..(42 & 48 deck are same).
