I recently replaced the Pto safety switch on 1980 C165 (#104680).It now starts fine, but engine quits when PTO is engaged .Could it be a .bad switch?  Thanks

It is probably the seat switch or the wires leading to it.

Would it still start with a bad seat switch? Or  does the seat switch kill the engine only when PTO is engaged?

Yup. The seat switch kills the engine when the pato is engaged and the operator leaves the seat.  The pto switch prevents the engine from cranking with the pto engaged.

Jump the seat switch temporarily and see if the engine stays running when you engage the pto.

Switch's are manufactured two different ways. Normally On,  or Normally Off. My guess is you installed the wrong type of switch. You want a normally off switch so that when you pull the lever to activate the implement the switch is turned on
