what is a attach a matic ?

The piece you have on the front of that tractor was designed to be added to older tractors so that they could use the later model implements. It isn't exactly common to see those.

@Handy Don's picture shows both parts of the Attach-A-Matic system, no tools needed to mount or dismount the mower deck. The older style like the one you have required some wrenching to run the belt to the mower. So, Attach-A-Matic;  That is the thingy     :thingy:   that hangs off the front of newer :wh: that that a mule drive attaches to. The mule drive allows the drive belt for the mower to transition from horizontal to vertical.

Interesting that it would show the newer style mule drive attaching matic with the older style hood....

Does anybody know what year they changed over? I had a 1970 Charger that I don't think had the newer style.

I think it was in 1973 that the Attach-A-Matic system started. @gwest_ca probably knows for sure.

That may have been added later, my 68 Raider had been updated to that style before I got it.

IMO, this PTO/mule drive is the best system Wheelhorse made.         The long PTO engagement lever bracket has a center notch that is used to easily adjust the clutch  to the proper 0.010" gap.       When adjusted, the lever always applies the proper pressure on the engaged clutch disc.      There are no safety switches to fail

The front mule drive is spring loaded and always applies the proper tension in the deck drive belt regardless of deck height or belt wear.

The front pulley guard also provides a nice bumper.

One negative, the front mule does require the bolting/unbolting of 4 bolts when switching from a deck to a plow or blower.   About 5 minutes twice a year.

The front Tac-A -Matic became the front part of the axle mount on the 73 Model Garden Tractors.
