pgiro 36 #1 Posted March 17, 2022 I need to replace the wheels & tires on my D-160. It currently has 18x8.5-8 tires. Not a problem to replace the tires but finding the wheels is the problem. Seems that the wheels should be 7x8 and I have 1" spindles on the tractor. I know the common solution is to switch to trailer hubs and get 4 bolt trailer wheels. My concern is that the trailer hubs are meant to be used with the spindle having outside threads that hold the hub in place with a washer and castle nut. The spindles on the D-160 have an internal thread so it could be a challenge to hold the hubs in place properly. Depending on how close the hubs come to the end of the spindle, I can see possibly having to machine a custom washer to make it all work. Has anyone done this hub conversion on a D series and did you run into this issue? I would love to find some original style wheels instead of going the hub route but they seem difficult to find. ebinmaine 72,675 #2 Posted March 17, 2022 What's specifically wrong with the wheels you have? Most things are repairable with patience and J. B. Weld. If yours are really past use or repair try contacting Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA. One of our own vendors. You could also put up a Wanted Ad in our Classifieds. Far as the trailer hubs I wouldn't hesitate a heartbeat to do the conversion. Larger bearings with adjustability. 8" (or larger) wheels can be bought in 4 or 5 lug. The outside washer needed may be available from a specialty hardware place like McMaster Carr.
JoeM 8,345 #3 Posted March 17, 2022 XI machines use an 8 inch rim with a straight 1 inch shaft hub similar to the D. the xi machines used shims and a split pin to hold the rim on the shaft. The bearings are sealed and have a snap ring on the outside that rides against the rim hub. They hold up well. My daughter's machine is a 2000 and the bearing are original. I can get some measurements today when I am up at the barn.

I'm kinda curious about this also .... what ARE the problems with your existing rims? Tires filled with something corrosive? rusted out?
pgiro 36 #5 Posted March 17, 2022 One of the rims is fine. The other one wobbles and seems to be warped somehow. That is the only issue. The bearings are fine on both of them.

The bearings are fine on both of them. I wobble a little too. I'm definitely warped. But then again I'm not trying to hold up the front of the tractor either... I'm wondering if maybe you could disassemble both wheels and dismount the tires etc. Get everything all cleaned up and double checked. Maybe use some sort of a press or porta power mechanism to de-bendify what you have?
WHX?? 51,748 #7 Posted March 17, 2022 Seems to me a guy here once had the spindles threaded and used trailer hubs or 520 rims? A suggestion was to cut the spindles off and welded axle stubs on for trailer hubs & Timken bearings on??? Was beefing up the front for a FEL build or somethin? JPWH 6,358 #8 Posted March 17, 2022 Can you post a picture of the wheel?
JoeM 8,345 #9 Posted March 17, 2022 Shaft length on a xi is 4 inches long, 3 3/4 to the cotter pin hole. The hub bearings measured outside to outside is 3 1/2. The wheel is 5 1/2 wide and the hub is 1 inch recessed in the rim.
pgiro 36 #10 Posted March 21, 2022 I'm going to try to salvage the original rims. I won't know how bad the questionable rim is until I take it to a place and have them mount the new tires, which should be at the end of this week hopefully. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!
pgiro 36 #11 Posted June 27, 2022 Just to follow up on this.. I had all the new tires mounted. I had the rear tires done at a tire shop. He said the rims were very rusty and one had water in it but they came out good. The front ones I had done at a place that sells and services lawn equipment. They were also in rough shape. It turns out that the front rim I had concerns about was warped badly and not usable. I bought a rim off of someone on this forum and had it remounted. Now all is finally good with the tires and it's ready to work. Thanks for all the advice. 2

pgiro 36 #13 Posted June 28, 2022 Yes, very handy. I made a set of forks from mostly scrap metal and they are very useful.
