nicky1 0 #1 Posted March 14, 2022 I was just curious if anyone has put a cast iron Briggs in a C-165 tractor. I have this tractor with a Kohler 12 horse that threw a rod. The Briggs is a 10 hp cast iron with electrric start.
ebinmaine 72,569 #2 Posted March 14, 2022 My significant other, trina, her first restoration was a 657 that we transplanted a 1978 Briggs 8 horse engine into. If the engine you are going to use does not have lateral crankshaft support you'll have to use an electric clutch. Other than that it's just a matter of lining up the mounts versus the original crankshaft location.
OutdoorEnvy 1,766 #3 Posted March 14, 2022 I would sure try it. I think those briggs are good engines. Parts are plentiful and easy to get.

Before I started using Kohler engines just a few years ago because of Wheelhorses I had always been a Briggs guy.
JoeM 8,331 #5 Posted March 14, 2022 Gear drive or hydro? Pretty significant difference 16 down to 10 HP. The hydro has parasitic hp use. May be 5-6 range. Not sure what you want to use it for but makes a difference. If gear driven it would be fine, wheel horse made a GT1100 using a briggs 11hp they ran great.
