Does any one out there know of a replacement engine for a 1985 wheel horse 314-8 garden tractor?

Some have replaced them with harbor Freight engines. What is wrong with your current engine? Can it be rebuilt? Place an ad in the wanted section on this forum.

There are 3 other engines that are direct crosses to your 14hp -- K241 (10hp)  K301 (12hp) and K341 (16hp)

 

Tell us what is wrong with your eng ... as much knowledge as there is on this forum someone can no doubt give you multiple choices/ideas/options.

It has a bad knock and blows alittle smoke on start up. I want to either fix or rebuild before it would throw a rod or something.

It's a spring project and it is a back up for our original 314-8 which has over 3200 hours on it.

Well, the bottom line with the words "bad knock" is ... youre gonna HAVE to go in there and find the problem before the engine is damaged beyond repair. There are 2-3 reasons for a bad knock and all need quick diagnosis. Usually a "bad" knock is the rod being worn and if run will come loose and ..... it can be ugly! 

These engines are relatively easy to pull and  take the head and pan off for an inspection, this will tell you quickly if it is the rod, - or less likely the piston.

3200 hours is alot on any engine, but if you can rebuild that Magnum you can likely get that much more from it. 

 

Unlike most newer engines, the K series and Magnum single cylinders are truly rebuildable with very long lifespans afterward. The blocks themselves are identical between the two for a given horsepower. Specs are where the block style diverges, but you can quickly discern the differences with some research. Same for the cranks, valvetrain, and so on. Only the peripheral items (basically bearing plate, starter, ignition system, and sheetmetal) are different. This allows for some flexibility when looking for parts.

 

As a side note- when you remove the balance gears, they make great paperweights. Don't put them back or try to replace them. 

 

Kohlers have some of the best documentation for rebuilding of any engine. It is almost impossible to mess one up if you follow the service manual, and they can be downloaded for free.
