WHX?? 51,728 #26 Posted February 17, 2022 Blasted the under side of the tank to find a bit of PO work. Both mounts and another patch and one of the bung reinforcements. Not sure if I should try and take the micro torch and try and melt them off and fix with soldering or sealing the tank as is. Leaning towards fixing it with solder. I've got some nice silver solder and every flux in book to do it. A few places the PO fix did not adhere well and not sure what it is ....JB weld... PC 7??? Once the tank is sealed all heat fixes are off. Pin holes I know I can reinforce with solder.

WHX?? 51,728 #30 Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) It's actually going good. One spot I can't get base metal clean enough to get the solder to bond with the base. With soldering it's all about the base metal and how clean it is. Will have one more crack at it and hope the sealer does its job providing I do the prep right I have been using a high strength 3.5% silver solder which melts at a higher temp than say good old 50/50 and may change up flux to a more agressive one. The thing with flux is you don't get it washed off it can corrode the metal worst than rust. Ther is just such a ton of fluxes and solders out ther one has to finger out what the orginals used and try and match that and go a few degrees lower melting point than what they used. This all pans out I might do an instructional ..... if it don't find me in the out house. Pics to follow.... Edited February 21, 2022 by WHX??
WHX?? 51,728 #31 Posted March 19, 2022 (edited) Update here finished up the soldering of the big holes. Went with the KBS products for sealer as Pullstart suggested. I was impressed by the etch too Kev. Actually was impressed by the whole kit. Now the destructions say don't rush and have patience, which I don't have any of, but I managed and it took three days to seal this tank with dry times and all. The first step was just a cleaner degreaser so I put some 1/4 nuts in the tank and a small piece of sash chain and it got alot of the rust and old gas varnish out. Second step was the etch and rust remover. Turns out this is just phosphoric acid which is the same in a bottle of rust remover. I think the first and second step bottles are just off the shelf products so could be procured local to make this a cheaper resto. Might have some proprietary stuff in it so who knows. Third step was the sealer... this stuff was some amazing stuff. Again the intructions say take your time dump it in and keep rolling the tank to get full coverage. Especially on weird shaped tanks and this was one of those. After your satisfied you coated the whole inside you have to make sure you have to dump it all out. It does not do well in puddles. It sure did find the pinholes I missed by soldering but appeared to weep out of them and seal them nicely. The second step opened up some I missed. Last pic helping it dry from water flushes. Four days later to cure back on and plumbed. Put some gas in tommorow. Give it an extra day to cure. The inside if these pics come out. .. Destructions said if you don't want it to stick to somthing like bung threads, caps or drain pans put some oil or wd40 on it and it won't stick.... bull roar I is gonna have a job cleaning up Squonky's bed pan!
