Winter fun - Project “Freedom” 440cc 2 Stroke 1054 Snowmotractor

Recommended Posts

Pullstart

My newest to-do list on the Snowmotractor:

  • Last jackshaft installed, pulleys installed/moved.
  • Belts sized and installed.
  • Tensioners or idlers.
  • Remove clutch cross shaft.
  • Transmission cleaned, assembled, extra holes plugged.
  • Install transmission.  Any room to lower it 1/2” or more?
  • Build a brake system.
  • Test run again.

No oil in the trans case, but it feels much free-er than it did before!

You don't have to use gear oil, I have been running 40 non-detergent in the 1055 transmission for years with no problem.

Yes, my plan is to use a light oil of some type.  My maximum shaft speed will be 2700 rpm and I’m only lubing one gearset and 6 bearings.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

Ya not so much of a Snowmotractor setting without snow.

I learned a lesson on the last jackshaft install.  This time, I guesstimated ( @ri702bill with my eyecrometer) where the pulleys could reside.  I then found a new belt that was close to fitting, this 15250.  Now I’ll bolt the two pulleys to the mill bed t-slots to find a happy distance on center for the second (or third?) jackshaft to call home.  I want the belt to be a struggle to get on the pulleys, but not get stretched.  I’ll then create a tensioner/idler to take up any slack.  @wallfish this tensioner will be locked in place, so the brake disc can still work :handgestures-thumbupright:

Thanks to @19richie66’s inspiration and guidance, I found the quick release button for the rear fender!  This will work out well, because I’d like to lift it up 1/2” or so for tire clearance.

I need to transfer the right side, but it all looks like it’s going to fit!

Here’s an image of jackshaft spacing calculations, bolted to the mill table as planned.

I'm sending some snow your way. Better hurry up as it does not look like it will be around long.

Spinning the new input shaft (brake shaft) without other internals, it makes me wonder if it may have been ok without this additional shaft.  I am very confident that this’ll pay off!

I’m pretty much to a point where I need a rear belt, then build the tensioner for it!

Pro: it moves better than it did last week.

Con: it’s still slipping belts.

‘Nuther Con:  it’s dark enough outside, I can’t see the culprit.

5/8 wide belts would probably perform better. Tight tight tight like you could play guitar on them

I once thought about putting pins in the pulley to catch the cog openings of the belt instead of relying on friction alone.

Chain it down in the shop or up to a wall so you can watch better. Look for the black powder of the belt for slipping areas but you might not have enough running time on it yet for that
