BD in CT 1 #1 Posted January 19, 2022 Hi guys Newbie here…..Brought home a 257h model 22-17ke01, all is sound but the steering pinion gear is shot….I mean worn the hell down!!!! Parts list shows # 106311-01 looks like 10teeth…. I am not finding much for replacements …it looks to me like steering support was mounted off center by a 1/4” is that normal on WH’s? But the support is not cracked ..Had lots of play/ gap between the 2 and the former owner just keep trucking until until he wore off the teeth and the wheels wouldn’t turn….What are my options for replacing this? I can’t seem to locate this part any longer by that number, finding few options on line/ eBay…… like 1…..I am new to WH tractors…. I’ve searched the site on fun with steering wheels … thinking of cutting it off at this point …..but the wheel is good what are my replacement options? or alternate part numbers that could fit this model? Any help is appreciated! Thx
Achto 29,413 #2 Posted January 19, 2022 (edited) Here is one source to check for the part. Some times best to call him https://a-ztractor.com/ Edited January 19, 2022 by Achto 1
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,512 #3 Posted January 19, 2022 Was surprised to see this steering. Is the illustrated parts list correct? https://www.partstree.com/models/22-17ke01-257-h-toro-yard-tractor-1988/front-axle-and-steering-mower-hanger-17/
BD in CT 1 #4 Posted January 19, 2022 I am not sure, but don’t think the steering was replaced prior……was expecting more replacement options online and thru eBay….. was wondering if the item number changed at some point

peter lena 9,301 #7 Posted January 19, 2022 @ BD in CT , hard to believe that gear and fan gear has a related GREASE FITTING ! imagine expecting someone lubricate anything . agree with @roadapples on worst seen , go lucas chassis grease , pete
BD in CT 1 #8 Posted January 20, 2022 Haha…there is some pride to hearing it’s the worst seen! .There is a zerk in place but the port was clogged and the grease was so old and caked on, it clogged the teeth on the fan blade so that the pinion could not seat or mesh….A-a had (1) used upper shaft in stock that is on the way…. Thx for the referral
peter lena 9,301 #9 Posted January 20, 2022 @BD in CT can under stand and visualize that zerk set up , remember your 4 front end fittings , with front end elevated , wheels just off ground , 1 on each vertical axel spindle , 1 at bottom center of front axel swing / mount point , 1 at steering gear , fan mount area. elevated wheels , make grease come out of top of spindle , often never lubricated . recommend using lucas , X- TRA HEAVY DUTY CHASSIS LUBE , walmart $ 7 . hi temp ,560 deg , anti sling , polyurea based , green and white tube , once you get that in any movable part , you will notice the smooth solid ease of function . as you build your steering set up , lube as you go , insuring its lubed . this lube is also a great bearing saver , will not fail as the original lube often does , pete
