Carb Restoration Question

Recommended Posts

pfrederi

I am restoring a #30 carb to use on a K-341.  Got it off ebay and it was in rough shape.  Scrapped off the thick crud and threw it in the Berrymans and promptly forgot about it.  (The mind is a terrible thing to lose)  Couple weeks later went looking to work on it one cold day and couldn't find it ...was still soaking.   Now have it cleaned up and Throttle and choke shafts out.

BUT  the choke and throttle butterfly were seriously rusted.  Emory cloth, wire brush and Dremel abrasive puff and rust is gone now bare metal.  Originals have some sort of brass colored coating (plated??).  I am not in the elecrto plating business so what to put on them to avoid future rust????  I have a rattle can of Eastwood carb paint.  I have used it on the outside of a carb seems to hold up ok.  Think that may work on the butterfly's???    ...Other ideas???

Think I would just polish them to a high luster and forget them.

Interesting but a bit involved for my two little pieces

Thats what I do -- although I have never had any really rusted, just maybe around the edges, I clean em and reinstall. Would think that once they are "off the shelf" and put into use shouldnt be likely to reoccur.

Yeah, the vid is nice but, would imagine not many here would tie up that kind of $$

What I suggested I do by hand, like maybe all of two minutes. :dunno:

They are really deeply pitted. This carb was a real mess.  The spring on the idle speed had rusted almost completely away

Don't think it will "Buff right out"  :P  Besides since I am not into polishing, waxing, shining I don''t have any Mothers.   :P

Agree with pacer. Don't think it would be a problem with regular use. Think is the key word here. But, it would be tempting to try to make them out of aluminum. Two round disks with two holes in each....:confusion-shrug:

Brass or copper may hold up better.

Choke butterfly has the two screw holes and 2 big holes to allow some air through when fully choked
