WheelhorseBob 1,550 #1 Posted January 16, 2022 Very straightforward question that will simplify my life. Can a K161 small bore be bored to std. big bore? For that matter could it be bored to the .030 spec for a big bore?

953 nut 59,896 #3 Posted January 16, 2022 If your engine block has a standard bore of 2.875" and you bore it out to 2.938" you would only be removing 0.063". In all likelihood the cylinder will require more than that little bit to make it worthwhile. Have the block and crank measured by an engine machine shop.

I read a bunch of things on the web That lead me to believe the small bore and big bore blocks were identical castings. Just nothing that said it point blank. I think he may be asking because the small bore rebuild kits (pistons) are hard/impossible to find. The larger 2.938 bore kits (pistons) are readily available. 2.875" was actually the bore size for the K141's, some early engines were labeled as K161 but had the smaller 2.875" bore instead of the 2.938" bore. Both engines had the same stroke. No problem boring the engine out to 2.938". you will have room to go .030 over if you need to rebuild it again in the future.
