U1's are pretty darn good.

I know @bizon mounted a car battery in the front of his WH 416-8 because U1's are pretty expensive here in Belgium.

He can not use the attach a-matic no longer

What problems are you having? Is the wiring good? Do you have good ground were needed?

@seven show us what you're using for a battery now, what are the cold cranking amps, etc :confusion-scratchheadyellow:

What ones are you using?

They can be anywhere from 135 to 300 or more CCA...

I'll second the questions.

What's the exact issue?

Have you removed and cleaned ALL the wires one by one, end by end?

FYI... My mid 70s C160 tractors can both use group 51 or 51R batteries.

I have a complete NEW harness.

Still a little resistant to start when it was below 20, 25⁰.

I went from a 220 CCA U1 to a 400+ CCA 51.

HUGE difference.

Thanks, I haven't heard of those batteries. Next time I will ask for those. U1's are mostly around the 350cca around here.

That's what I have in my tractors, 2 of them are 16hps and I have no problem starting them even when the temps are near zero. Most batteries are probably 3-4 years old.

An electrical system the is in poor condition won't be helped by a bigger battery.

@seven  been using BATTERY TENDERS FOR YEARS , walmart has them for about 35$ , have 3 of them wired in on my 3 horses , just a matter of plugging it in , @ebinmaine  is correct with the CCA , COLD CRANKING AMPS , the higher the better , regularly plug in my tenders , just to top off a charge rate , typically get  6-7 years  or more from batteries , use the walmart brand  with 300 + CCA  rating . would also check your tractor charging set up , might no be doing all it can , pete

Same here, I've got 3 twins and a K341 all running off Wally World 300 cca 'lawn mower batts' One of em is 5 yrs old. I think they are a great battery for cheap! at about $30ish. I had one fail at 2yrsand took it back without receipt just the build date on the batt -- lady looks at it and sez "go get another one".....

What are you trying to cut?

You should be using a saw, or maybe shears, or scissors.  And don't run with them in your hand!

At that temperature even a BRAND NEW battery would be down to about 50% of it's capacity.  Add to that the thickerer oil and extra load of the starter.

If you were to keep the battery WARM and on a battery tender, you might be OK.

Ask Mrs. Google about "Car battery heater".

There's another thread currently active about the same thing.  I believe that fellow is also in MN.

WHX??

My 520 sno movers just have U1 300 CCA batts in them and they have no problem starting in -10 but I do keep a tender on them. More for just cause they can sit more than get used but they do keep the battery more active.   Finding them on the shelf anywhere at a decent price in the 430 CCA , which is what I prefer for my winter machine, is hard to find around here.

You southern guys gotta remember the chemical reaction in a battery slows way down in sub zero temps which happens alot at Seven's locale.

Batteries plus will have the best ones in higher CCA but they ain't exactly givin them away. Twice what a Wally World one goes for so Wally gets the nod for summer tractors.

Can you snap a pic of that?

Did you put in a primer bulb?

Have you had the battery load tested at an auto parts store?      This was suggested several times.
