Cats are cool… relatively low maintenance compared to a little dog. Bailey can get on your nerves but we love him… hope he can’t read, but my wife swears he knows what we say to him.

And I'm still debating about whether or not I should pull the oil pan off the 12 horse and pull those balance gears.  I've got that machine all set up for plowing and did use it last snow but I definitely don't want to 'window' the block.

I could probaably pull the engine, drop the pan, pull the gears, and get it back together in one day, before the next snow... but  you know about the  best laid plans...

Can anybody tell me where this white plug would go on the electrical on my 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 with a 16hp twin Briggs ? Maybe someone could tag someone who can post an electrical schematic. I can’t seem to find it here. Or tell me how to get to it please…

Okay I see where the white plug goes… is it possible that someone cut the green/ black wire because it’s not needed ?

And does this black wire go on the terminal(2nd pic) ?

You really helped me out. I think I can figure it out now.

The white plug coming out of the engine goes to the magneto. The other side/ tractor side of the white  plug has two wires… one white and one green …

The green is supposed to go to light switch, white to “R” on switch.

Looks like PO cut the green wire and run the light switch wire to “A” on the switch which is hot when switch is in the run position… 

Does that sound right ?

Not sure why that would have been done but lots of tractors are wired with lights to "A" terminal.

Well to tell the truth @ebinmaine, I’m not exactly sure I called it right…

I am gonna have to go back out to the shop tomorrow with the electrical schematic and take a closer look.

Wiring IS NOT my forte’… everything runs together and my head about explodes !

Did you look at the colored wiring diagram ? You can see that the green from the magneto goes to light switch. You may have to scroll up and look at the download… I took a screenshot and it’s blurry if you try to enlarge it . Wiring bout does me in !

I get by pretty good, so even though I'm not familiar with your machine I should be able to help with questions.

 

The diagram shows that there is a diode in that circuit... see it next to the plug drawing?  I don't know where that's located.  I think I read somewhere on the forum that it's 'in-line' and covered with heat shrink?  Is there a 'bump' in the wire with heat shrink over it?

Yes.

A diode passes current in only one direction.  They are used to change (rectify) AC to DC.

 

The output of the stator is AC, thus the diode is needed to change to DC.

 

Note the labels on the two lines of the diagram:

 

 

The lights are run off of the AC output and the battery charging has to be DC.

 

Are there LED headlights on the machine?  That could be one reason the OP changed the wiring.  LEDs need DC, but I have seen some PAR 36 LED headlamps that are labeled "AC or DC" .

I don’t think so. I’ll have to look tomorrow. I hope I left the headlights in the hood, or I’ll have to look for them.

The LED PAR36 look just like sealed beam.  Same form and fit.

I’ll have to verify, but judging by the shape of the tractor when it was given to me I doubt they are.

I hate being on a task, hit a bad spot, get answers and help , then have to wait until the next day to get back into it.

Don’t worry, when I get started back on the wiring harness reinstall I will be reaching out for answers …

Don't look at the page as a pile of colored spaghetti. 

The wires are color coded so they can be visually and mentally separated and chased. 

If every circuit was its own page in the manual it would be far less intimidating to most but it would be too much to print. 

 

Once you learn to separate the diagram as a whole to a bunch of separate circuits it's a LOT easier to understand. 

 

I personally find it much easier to read a schematic diagram on a full sized piece of paper than a phone or computer screen. 

Another thing you can do is get a couple plain white pieces of paper to use as blockers to cover the part of the diagram you don't need to see. 

You'd be surprised to see how much that changes your focus.

The engines with the diode are low amp output. The lights will burn brighter at high RPM.  WH set it up that was to isolate the lights from the battery. My guess the PO switch it to get more light.
