1984 Work Horse GT-1600 REFRESH

Recommended Posts

Horse Newbie

Okay @Bill D I’m not sure of what to buy now…
I marked my old drive belt on the 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 and rolled it out beside a tape measure on the floor until the mark came back around, and it appears to come out to about 83.5”, 83-5/8”, or maybe an 84”.

Is your GT1642 a hydro ?

The attached pic I have of parts diagram show a cooling fan and the part # (#6) for the belt shows as being 7473 or 107939…

but when I rolled it out next to the tape measure it was not nearly 93.5”

I was thinking maybe the 7473 was for 8 speed and the 107939 was for a hydro…

Once that frame and transmission is bolted together and in a stable position there's no reason why you can't drop 2 or 3 qts of diesel into it. Spin a wheel to get the gears moving or even just letting it sit. Certainly won't hurt anything.

I was thinking of putting it on jack stands with engine at near idle and just let it run through each gear and reverse for about 10 minutes with diesel in it, drain, do again, drain, refill with oil .

Straight from the only safe source these days for accurate parts lookup: original Wheel Horse micro-fiche. NEVER trust the online parts lookups. Much of the info and diagrams were generalized or grouped together when it was put online, causing a whole lot of confusion. Not saying there aren't mistakes on the fiche, but nothing like online lookups. 107939 updates to 93-9809.

My apologies for the previous post.  Hurried post plus fat fingers equals wrong belt size.  The belt is an 83.5" belt.  Sorry for the confusion.  I edited the previous post.

Yes sir… I thought that may have happened, and another member here, @76c12091520h did verify the number you gave (107939), and the number it updated to.

I was not trying to second guess your advice, but with mail orders I wanted to double check as so not to order the wrong part.
Thanks again Bill !

So that link I sent you the other day is incorrect.

I believe I based that on a 7473?

Well hopefully a little progress on the Work Horse will arise from this small bit of temporary confusion…

Made a little more progress on the Work Horse today…

Got the engine bolted back on, transmission input shaft pulley on, belt on, front spindles on…

Ran into a small setback with the new tie rods…

The tie rods come down to the spindle arms at such an angle that the ball joints are going to bind when the bolts to hold them are tightened… guess I’ll have to go back to McMaster and Carr and buy some ball joints that have the studs made into them.

You've got plenty of thread on those bolts. All you need is some spacers to allow the heim body room to roll a little more. Had the same issue on the Bronco. I bought some long spacers at Lowe's or TSC (both carry them) and cut them down to 1/4 inch or so . Just add them as they are in the pic below.

Man mine have gotten cruddy over the years!

That Work Horse is looking SWEET!!!!

Does anybody know if this small pin on the Work Horse GT-1600 PTO thing is a spring pin or a roll pin ?… or could I use either one ?

As you can see by the pic, 1/8” is too small and 3/16” is too big. What size fits ?

Welllll...  I'll tell ya what my part manual says in a second, but first...

1/8 = 4/32  and  3/16 = 6/32  soooo,

It would seem to be a 5/32 roll pin.  and the manual confirms this and says it's an inch and a quarter long, but I use 1-1/2" because TSC doesn't have them in 1/4" increments.

The pin has to 'float' in one of the pieces, of course.

What's weird about this is that of the two machines I have, both 1980, the C-125 and the C-175,  the 175 floats on the OUTER piece (as it appears that yours does also) and the 125 floats on the ROD.

I didn't get out the caliper to measure, but it appears that someone in the past may have bored out the holes on the 125 and used a 3/16" pin.

Is this a parts manual for a 1984 Work Horse GT-1600, or a manual for a different model, or a manual that happens to have that PTO design ?

Does anybody have pics of the decal locations on the dash and transmission console on a 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 ?

I took pics before the tear down, but I have changed phones since then… and I really didn’t do a great job taking pics anyways.

I thought to myself… I’ve got this, I’ll figure it out.

You can tell I’ve started back on the 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 again because I’m on here screaming for help !

So I am all over the place with the Work Horse. I am thinking about ag tires on the rear, tri-ribs on front; or ag’s all the way around.

I bought Hi-Run brand for my 520H and am happy with them. I seen Hi-Runs on the web, but not the size that the Work Horse currently has(23 x 9.50-12).
All I seen in ags is 23 x 10.50-12.

Will the 10.50 wide fit ?

I don’t want to mail order them and they not fit.

C Series, but I seriously doubt that there is any difference in that PTO ...  they were all pretty much the same for like... ever.

Yeah, I see what you are saying…

I will have to figure which piece on the Work Horse will “float”.

I guess as long as you can move that piece enough to swing that half hoop around.

Thanks @Jeff-C175, I’ll just have to find a roll pin that fits one piece or the other.
