WHNerd 8 #1 Posted May 18, 2021 I have an Electro 12, ignition switch went bad, purchased switch, went to install switch, found no fuses. Tractor has no solenoid, starter works off ignition switch. Should it have fuses, if so where? TIA
pfrederi 18,563 #2 Posted May 18, 2021 Originally they had a heavy duty ignition switch that feed full amperage to the stater no fuses. Did you get the heavy duty switch (usual fairly expensive and has screw terminals) Generic 5 pin switches will not work in this direct mode.
Stepney 2,352 #3 Posted May 18, 2021 There are two switches for your model, both are Cole Hersee units. One is for the solid state or magneto ignitions, and one for the battery and coil. E12 used all three over the short run they had. All of them have 50a rated lugs. The switch is not cheap. Personally I add a solenoid in. I don't like the high draw right behind my gas tank..
WHX?? 51,371 #4 Posted May 18, 2021 Mr Brown @new2horses has the 70 amp ones reasonable.
WHNerd 8 #5 Posted May 18, 2021 Thanks everyone. This is the type of switch that was in the tractor since I bought it 30 or so years ago.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #6 Posted May 19, 2021 Very important to know what type of ignition this engine has. Wrong one can burn up the ignition coil. Does the ignition coil look like this one for battery ignition?

That switch can be used for battery ignition, OR with the addition of a relay, it can be used for magneto ignition.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #9 Posted May 19, 2021 If you have a combination starter/generator the wiring should be something like this. No fuses but you could add a fuse to any of the light gauge wires coming off the ignition switch. Click on the picture in the link and again on the next page to view it. Gregor 4,847 #10 Posted May 19, 2021 If this is in fact your wiring diagram, and you have a starter/generator Your switch has 4 terminals. Battery Ignition Starter Accessories Accessories is not used.. I have the same wiring on my 876. The only place I have a fuse is in the line to the cigarette lighter. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #11 Posted May 19, 2021 If the engine has a Bendix starter and flywheel alternator it would be wired like the Bronco 14. A fuse could be added to the wire going from battery source to ignition switch B terminal. A smaller fuse could be added to the other ignition switch wires going to coil and 12 volt accessories. WHX?? 51,371 #12 Posted May 19, 2021 In other words the guys are just guessing your model. Can you give us the exact model number Nerd? Tag under the dash or the side of the hood stand? A picture would help too in case someone has a replacement motor in it.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #13 Posted May 19, 2021 Looking back the engine was replaced with 14hp so with a battery coil should be a K-Series. What we do not know is the charging system or the type of starter. Garry

WHNerd 8 #15 Posted May 21, 2021 Ok, here are all the numbers I could find; K321 Spec 60221d 6348098 Model 1-7245 Ser 567538 I bought it from Staub's Lawn Mower in Arendtsville, PA He had a customer that wanted work done on the unit, but decided to get an new mower and Staub kept my mower as a trade in. It does indeed have Bendix starter and flywheel alternator. Do I have hybird;-) Part Electro 12 and part Bronco 14? Thanks!!!

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #18 Posted May 22, 2021 You have the makings of a nice tractor. Kohler K321 Spec 60221d is a service replacement engine. Serial 6348098 was made in 1974. This engine has a 15 amp charging system and battery ignition. The diagram above for the 1972 Bronco 14 will work. You can add a 30 amp fuse at the solenoid to power the B terminal on the ignition switch. That would prevent a catastrophic electrical failure. You can eliminate the ammeter from the wire to the ignition switch. You will not have the neutral switch in the wire to the solenoid. Do you have a solenoid? Good idea because it saves overloading even an expensive heavy duty ignition switch. If the wiring terminals on the new ignition switch are identified differently than the diagram lets us know what you have. Garry
