Hello friends I have a question I would like to test the starter motor of my wheel horse 702, can you tell me how to connect to a battery to see the direction of rotation of the motor?

All Kohler horizontal shaft engines turn clockwise when facing the flywheel.  The back of your starter/generator should have "CW" stamped in the back, bottom plate.  :occasion-xmas:

So looking at the starter motor pulley it rotates clockwise, thanks!
I asked because I have seen a store that says before ordering the new starter see the direction of rotation.

There is a large terminal at the rear of the starter motor body, this is the positive terminal.

If you are just connecting jumper leads from a battery to a motor to check if it runs clip the negative to the motor casing and touch the positive onto the terminal.

Don't connect up the leads to the motor and touch them to the battery terminals as you could cause an explosion.

Also be aware that if the starter is on the bench it could jump around when you activate it.

Steve us perfectly correct if you are just wanting to know the direction of rotation of the engine, I.e. clockwise, so the starter itself turns clockwise.

Just to be clear, there is no starter motor pulley, just a ring gear on the flywheel. When you look at the engine from the left of the tractor the grass screen on the flywheel will turn clockwise. 20210225_151913.jpg.572a2fcfc11c5ec543a768447fe03f31.jpg

Starter jenny model. That unit turns clockwise looking at the flywheel.   Cub Cadet starter jennies turn opposite because they are mounted on the opposite side of the engine. That's why opposite rotation

Hook ground "-" to the body of the sarter/generator and touch positive "+" power to the "A" terminal on the starter/generator. It should spin clock wise.

Like Mike was saying and I want to clear this up.  All Kohler engines with horizontal shafts turn clock-wise when looking at the fly wheel.  Starter can turn either way, depending on how the field coils are wired inside the starter.  Wheel Horse has all their starters on the fly wheel side of the engine, thus those starters turn clock-wise.  Like Mike said...Cub-Cadets put their starters on the engine pulley side of the Kohler engines they use...thus the engine turns clock-wise but the starter needs to turn Counter Clock-wise.

Also, you can not reverse the starter direction buy reversing the leads to the battery.  You have to go inside and reverse the wiring at the two field coils.  The direction of the starter or starter/generator should be stamped on the back of the unit.

Starters do not have pulleys, but starter / generators do.  @Mickwhitt   :handgestures-thumbupright:

@carlosking450   Glad you got it right.  :occasion-xmas:

This is why I know so much about this.  A few years ago, like you, a guy from the Netherlands was looking for a starter / generator.  I offered to help him.  Pats Engine Parts in Minnesota carries them, but he does not ship over-seas.  So I told the guy I was trying to help...he could buy the starter and ship it to me and I would then ship it to him.  I did not know about the clock-wise / counter clock-wise thingy.  We ordered the correct starter, but they were mixed up in the boxes.  I got the starter/generator, showed it to my friend on SKYPE and then mailed it to him.  He got it and it was the wrong polarity.  Well, it was almost $90 to ship it to him and Pat's would only deal with me, since I had bought it.  so, my friend would have to ship it back to get replaced and then have it shipped again.  3 time $90 was just unacceptable.  We figured out he could change the wiring in the coils and that is what he did.  All ended well, but dang, I was feeling real bad by trying to help.  Maybe Pat's ships over-seas now, I don't know.

The problem it has is that it does not load, the starting function works but sometimes without force for it to turn I have to overcome the compression of the motor by hand

Mine, I think does the same thing, it seems to work better after charging the battery for a bit.  I am thinking it needs new brushes...my 702 does need a new battery though.  If it is brushes, that would be a lot cheaper to fix.  What do you think??

I need to put something new, because a specialist looked at it for me and it is better to repair it than to buy a new one

The translator failed, I meant that it is more expensive to repair it than to buy a new one

Did this guy take it apart?  Do you have it together or apart?  Can this guy get you a new one if that is what you need?

Make sure you battery cables are top notch. Not just clean terminal ends. They corrode under the insulation. If they are old, replace them with at least 4 ga. wire. If they are corroded they may not carry enough amps to turn your motor over.

I am searching for my old thread that I was talking about above.  What is the part number that you have?  I think that I have 3 of these starter / generators on my 7 & 8 horse engines.  I am willing to take off the one on the 702 and open it up and see if we have the same issue.  Shipping brushes is a lot cheaper then a whole unit.  Do you have Skype??
