Is this normal? Carb problem

Recommended Posts

The black gasket was hanging out of the carb, so I too the bowl off. Is it supposed to be two pieces? Advice on getting it back together?

Seems like the bowl gasket is stretched out. It’s a little too big.

This is off of a Kohler engine, right?

These engines typically have a gasket that fits in a groove in the upper part of the carb and the flat gasket that fits on top of the bowl and under the gasket in the groove.  The flat gasket usually hangs outside the carb a little bit.

The flat gasket on my tractor has a cut out that fits around the float pivot point.  Didn't notice that notch in yours.

You can buy a carb. rebuild kit at most good auto parts stores or :techie-ebay: for about $ 10.00.

Most definitely!! Have the carb off and on the bench upside down, getting those 2 gaskets seated right can be finiky. On the flat thin gasket that wide area is there to help against fuel from 'sloshing' around and getting into the intake

I also change the float bowl when rebuilding a carb.  I use Briggs  PN 221995.  It's made of plated steel and is more resistant to corrosion.  Bill

Is that because the bowl gasket is stretched?

Stretched and most likely hard and brittle.

I think it is more the fuel causes them to swell and all makes do it. Guess that is better than shrinking.

These carburetors are not at all difficult to rebuild. Look over this thread and you will see what needs to be done.

@953 nut  How do I know if it needs to be completely rebuilt vs just new gaskets?  Thanks!

While you have it off, might as well do a through cleaning.  That way you might not have to go pull the carb again.
