acc7484 52 #1 Posted March 29, 2021 Hello All, Does anyone know how to adjust the governor on the Onan P220g engine? Does anyone have a have a picture both ends showing witch of the 3 holes the carb linkage goes into. How about the gov spring linkage witch hole is correct? Im not sure what the PO did with this machine. There is a half inch of play back and fourth. Is that normal ? High speed seems fine. I have a smooth idle . However the mid range RPMs Surge. I re-sealed the intake. Cleaned the carb. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

lynnmor 7,815 #3 Posted March 29, 2021 The Onan Service Manual is here. It will help you with the correct holes and how to adjust the governor. I'll give you the basics of the three adjustments. First back off the idle speed screw found near the throttle cable end by several turns. Next, warm the engine and adjust the engine idle speed screw on the carburetor to 1200 RPM. Now you will adjust the idle mixture screw to get the highest and best idle. Readjust the idle speed if needed and readjust again. The idle speed screw near the cable end can now be adjusted to 1400 RPM. Note that different manufacturers use slightly different idle speeds, your 520H may be 1200 and 1400. Move the throttle to maximum speed, the cable should have pushed the lever against a stop, if not, adjust the cable position till it does. Now bend the stop as required to get 3600 RPM, test by moving the throttle down and up. With all that said, I doubt that the governor is your surging issue. Do the above and if the surging continues, revisit the carburetor internals.
acc7484 52 #4 Posted March 29, 2021 Thank you Iynnmor I will follow your instructions and adjust the carb ..... The carb has been apart 3 times. and I used an ultrasonic cleaner. I sealed the intake. with new gaskets and did a valve adjustment. New plugs and new wires. I did move the linkage opposite the throttle to the center hole, that took out most of the play in the linkage. Then I drilled an access hole through the muffler bracket so as to easily adjust the mixture screw.

If you have a very long screwdriver the idle mixture screw can be adjusted on models with the large hole in the muffler bracket.
