acc7484 52 #1 Posted March 13, 2021 Hello All, I removed the Intake to to reseal it. Problem is how do I get it apart? I drilled out the rivets . It wont separate. Is there a trick Im missing?
lynnmor 7,814 #2 Posted March 13, 2021 If you drilled all the rivets it should pry apart easily. In the photo with the screws installed it looks like there is a rivet that still needs drilled.
acc7484 52 #3 Posted March 13, 2021 I installed screws and nuts as I drilled to keep things in alignment. That photo was during the process. Im afraid I might break it. Its really stuck together.
acc7484 52 #4 Posted March 14, 2021 OK folks I got it! I used two utility knives to carefully pry it open. I dont think I had a problem with this leaking vacuum. I will clean it up and reseal it.

My school of thought is "if it ain't broken no need to fix it" but you are already there, for future reference the quick and easy way to check for a manifold vacuum leak is with the engine running idle (or a bit above is fine) spray carburetor cleaner around the base of them carb, the entire manifold especially the seam, and around the mating flanges, if the engine "revs" higher you have a leak, go slow little squirts at these areas one at time will help pin point where the "break" is, if no noticeable increase in engine speed/rpm then there was no leak and most likely a carb or fuel delivery issue, not a vacuum leak.
acc7484 52 #6 Posted March 14, 2021 WVH There was a vacuum leak. the manifold was loose at the engine. Now that I see how the factory sealer has deteriorated that may have been part of the problem. The carb was very clean inside. I will ultrasonic clean it ......

Horse Newbie 7,395 #8 Posted March 14, 2021 (edited) @acc7484 In the 2nd pic in frame 1 above, there appears to be a black line across the seam... Looks like where the exhaust heat shield is rubbing. When you get the intake manifold back on, hold the front exhaust manifold heat shield in place and you will see where the heat shield tends to rub a hole in the intake manifold across the seam. This is a common occurrence on the 520H's. Take a pair of tin snips and trim a little metal off the edge of the exhaust manifold if needed. I will post a pic of where mine was rubbing if I can find the pic. I hope you resealed with gasoline resistant sealer. I opted to just reseal mine without drilling out the rivets and separating the 2 halves...although there are some on here that would say separate and seal... SadieCoonhound 8 #9 Posted March 16, 2021 Thanks Hillbilly. I tried your carburetor cleaner test and sure enough I found a leak in the intake manifold. After removing it, it appears in very good shape. I too, want to just try to seal it like Horse Newbie did. Newbie, what kind of sealer did you use? And acc your pictures and thread are very helpful and in my humble opinion done very well. Looking forward to following your progress.

lynnmor 7,814 #13 Posted March 17, 2021 I use MotoSeal 1. When you tighten the screws thru the two halves, you should put screws thru the carburetor mounting holes and tighten them just slightly so that there is the correct amount of sealant there.

acc7484 52 #15 Posted March 17, 2021 Prepping the Intake: Thoroughly clean the two halves. I used a sharp putty knife, Brass brush and Isopropyl Alcohol to degrease the parts. in addition i filed the mating surfaces to fit perfectly. Apply a thin coating of Motoseal (29132) Gasket Maker Its very messy. I used a small brush to apply it. I made a holding fixture to hold the manifold halves in position. I installed the nuts and screws. After some drying time I coated the edge with another layer of Motoseal.
acc7484 52 #16 Posted March 17, 2021 Nikki 146-0414 Carburetor The PO gave me a rebuild kit made by Autokay. I only used a few parts the base gasket needle valve, O-ring and air horn gasket, the rest was trash including the float. Made of a cheep plastic with two halves glued together. The most important thing is to make sure these small holes in the base are clean use a "hang tag" wire to make sure they are clear. Set the float on this unit its .050" from the top edge or the thickness of the gasket. I have a surface plate so I use this to refinish all the mating surfaces.
