520H carb for Onan P220G-I

Wheel Horse 1988 520-H model 31-20OE01 with Onan P220G-I.

 Hello All, 

  I am looking for a proper Carb rebuild kit for my Wheel Horse 520H. 

What type of carb is this? 

Is 146-6100 the correct number?

Thank you for your input.

If you search the auction site for a Nikki 6100 kit for a P220G you should find rebuild kits for around $30.

 

Onanparts dotcom has genuine Onan 146-0657 kits for $49

not for a rebuild - unless something is broken you just clean the jets, replace the float and the needle the button it all back up with new gaskets. 

 

if you have the stock diaphragm fuel pump, you may consider not fitting in the filter - i've heard that sometimes the cheap filters can cause too much of a restriction for the stock pump to do it's thing if it isn't tip top.

Double check that the little plug is in place above the idle mixture adjustment screw (called a welch plug) pointed to by the red arrow.

If that is missing, make sure your rebuild kit includes one. (And read up on how to set one in place!)

Don ...... The welch plug appears to be there.

The picture above shows it. 

I will double check.

What is behind there? 

 

I have an Idle adjustment screw there as well.

If you find much dirt, it might pay to pull that welch plug because there are three small passages hiding in there.  A 3/8" aluminum welch plug will be needed to close it back up, using a very small amount of sealant on the edge.

 

Screw out the idle mixture screw and blast carb cleaner thru there as well as all other passages.

 

I have found that some of the cheap needles have a razor sharp that causes them to bind to the float, carefully stone off any sharp edge.

 

It is easier to pull the intake to get the carb off, do not reuse the gaskets and replace them with only genuine Onan parts.  Now I will give you a few more chores.  The two piece intakes can leak between halves, inspect carefully.  The heat shields often cut into the sides of the intake, if they are hitting or close, grind a little clearance.  While the intake and exhaust are off would be a good time to adjust the valves and paint the exhaust.  Use only Onan gaskets there as well.

My personal preference when working on engines is to do anything now, while I have things apart, that might have to be done in the next two or so years. @lynnmor gave me these assignments (and more) when I redid my carb (I did clean behind and replace the welch plug) and it fired right up afterward and works just fine now. I don't expect to have to go in there again for as long as I keep the fuel system clean, change the air filter regularly, and use good gas.

I did visit the page and that machine is in great shape. It may need a little 30 year maintenance here and there but, wow! You're doing great work.

Thanks "Tuneup" Its taking shape. I do have a more serious problem. Sometimes when you accelerate its pops through the carb. I'm hopping its a valve adjustment. 

The oil was very low and very dirty and the air cleaner was full of sand, so the condition of the engine is concerning. I changed the oil and filter. 

I did install new plugs and wires. It runs much better. I hear both cylinders. It does Hunt a little at idle. The gaskets are on order and I will Be tearing it down today for a valve adjustment Intake manifold and carb service.

The good news is it has less than 500 Hours on it.

WOW, I visited your page and you are doing it right.

That pop thru the carb and the hunt is likely a lean condition caused by dirt in the carb.  It would be best to check the compression so you have a better idea about the engine condition.

I hope you pulled the fuel tank to clean under it, a lot of debris collects there and causes rust.

Lynnmor ,Thank You. The machine was very muddy. Yes I blew air and water through there to clean it out. 

Im tearing down the top side today intake and muffler. Everything is loose.

I believe the compression was 120 front and 110 rear. 

It was running poorly. I will test it again after its running good. I dont want to get into a rebuild right now. I will adjust the valves. Re condition the intake manifold. 

to resolve the vacuum leak.

I still have the deck to do.
