Won’t start

Picked up carb yesterday and new air filter. Put back on and it fired up immediately sounded great. However idle was high so I adjusted it down and it stalled never to start back up? Checked fuel it’s getting but spark was not. Engine shop said either points or coil. I did look at points very dirty. I’ll try to clean?? He suggested sandpaper if not he’ll come and check it out. That’s where I am now.

Get a VOM and with the ignition switch on check for 12v.  at the + post on the coil.       If it ran good and just quit, I suspect a wire may have vibrated loose....possibly at the ignition switch   "I" lug.

Much better to find the problem before throwing expensive parts .

Thanks Ed I’ll do that. I did sand the points as mechanic said still no fire. Stinks. I’ll get a meter.

So my small engine mechanic came up after work with his voltmeter(I haven’t had a chance to get one yet) He brought a set of points the ones on it were pitted and shot. Intermittent spark. Tried to fire but wouldn’t stay running. He checked voltage at battery was 12. Coil was 12 however when I cranked it went down. He said to clean all wires and cables at battery, negative cable where it bolts to engine and also where coil mounts to engine??? He said I have a ground issue? Make sense? I’ll do this and see where I’m at next.

I’ll keep you posted

With the battery at 12 volts it is severely discharged.  Charge it completely and have it tested, it may be spent.

So my small engine mechanic loaned me a new battery to try today and I installed it and we have a smooth running engine now!! I’m so happy thanks to all of you. A few things. I have a cleaned carburetor how do I adjust it? There’s 3 screws one being the idle.
also one of you mentioned the back of the ignition area. Extremely dirty and corroded. I have a picture the plug is the ignition I’m assuming what is the other connectors? They were very dirty as well. I took off the gas tank and cleaned those as well.
