Shed 249 #1 Posted February 7, 2021 Hey there I wanted to ask this for motor people. I have a magnum mv16 vertical shaft not running came out of a toro. I planned to use it for a log splitter build. In your opinions is this thing worth rebuilding or just buy a new 16hp size engine. I figures if I'm taking this thing apart it's going all the way and I see the cost for rebuilding parts are pretty costly. But are these motors worth rebuilding that's the question too. Maxwell-8 4,367 #2 Posted February 7, 2021 If the block is cast-iron, I would rebuild it. have seen a lot of aluminum block engines with cracks or even holes.
lynnmor 7,745 #3 Posted February 7, 2021 You won't know till you do the autopsy. Unless you do a considerable amount of splitting, a less than perfect engine might be acceptable.
Shed 249 #4 Posted February 7, 2021 Considering I never shut down my outdoor wood stove I do a bit of wood. My splitter is an old unit that I blew the ram packing out right as winter hit so I'm sitting on contemplation ha. I can not afford a new good brand splitter at average price 5k I'm a good builder and my current splitter is a good quality old one so I thought just use it to make a bigger better splitter. The only thing I see is this engine is vertical shaft most splitters are horizontal. The block is cast out of a 1994 toro. I can get a new duromax engine 16hp electric start 349 ... pfrederi 18,584 #5 Posted February 7, 2021 I didn't realize MV-16 were twins with alloy blocks. I am launching into a complete over haul of an M-18 horizontal twin. Parts especially over size may be hard to find. I am figuring at least $750 for parts and machine shop bore and grind... Do you know what is wrong with it now. Maybe a hone and re-ring??? or more serious??
Shed 249 #6 Posted February 7, 2021 I just cant get it to fire but I'm guessing the valves need replacing and I'm sure the pistons need new rings. It came off a toro walkbehind. That was used pretty hard. I put a brand new starter on it. At the price of plugs wires and ignition module I'm a 3rd away from a replacement. Well looking at the picture looks like the head is cast block may be aluminum
pfrederi 18,584 #7 Posted February 7, 2021 Two piece block is alloy as are the heads. The jugs are cast iron. Valves are not adjustable. you can do a re-ring just pulling the jugs. If you have a rod/crank issue you have to split the crankcase. Since it isn't running it is impossible to be sure how bad off the engine is. I think I would buy the re[placement engine.
