520 PTO pulley

Recommended Posts

Any gurus available that know if the bearings and PTO can be changed from a 418 Kohler Magnum directly onto a 520 with an Onan?

Just wanted to check before I go out there and start taking them all apart to find out I froze my nuts off for nothing.

Blew out the outer bearing while blowing the deep heavy DOT drifts and still have more to go. That bearing was definitely due to be changed but of coarse I procrastinated too long. Might be able to get out of the driveway for a new bearing and snap ring if it's a common size and available at TSC so that info would also be helpful if someone knows.

John, I think the bearing is the same. Napa # P204RR6 . As far as the snap ring goes I believe I just get a pack from McMaster-Carr # 99142A570  1.75" I.D   O.D. 1.942" .068" thick. You can drive on down here in your van and I'll give you a couple! :occasion-xmas:

Or just swap the pulleys and get the snow done. I keep an extra pulley on the shelf  and my feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

Or you can drive up here and fix it! That would easier LoL

It's the little snap ring right at the inner bearing race. Looks smaller than 3/4, is that a 5/8 ?It clips on that little shaft which goes to the hoop

Oh that clip. Don't have that size in my memory banks but a "Well inventoried " hardware store should have it. I looked it up 3'4" x .046" thick. O.D. is about .082"

You don't have another tractor to rob the pulley off of for now?

All set!!! Froze me nuts off and the entire PTO assembly swapped right over. Just need to warm up a little now before going back out there. The wind is really whipping.

The biggest PITA was those little bolts for the PTO brakes. The 520 had the nuts under but at least the 418 had the nuts on top. Much easier!

Being a machinist with that blue print in hand I would have had to start that out of a 4' (foot) square sheet of 3/64" shim stock then take it back down to a diameter 5/64" - 3/32". BTW I'm just giving you a hard time but in my line of work decimals and where they and zeroes are placed plus ' (foot)  vs " (inches) can make or break the final outcome of a quality job... :hide: :confusion-confused:.

It's days like this that make me realize how stupid I am to live this far north!

A heated cab ain't gonna fix stupid ya know!

Had a heat deflector into the cab on the 418-C but haven't done anything for that on the 520 yet.
