How can I put a 120° bend in 3/4" diameter rod?

I didnt realize they were made different. I have no idea what the radius is on the spindles. I do know on my custom, spindles from a Craftsman fit and had the same angle

I've done some extra measuring and thoughts. 

 

As far as the colosusususes spindles, I'm going to go a slightly different direction. No matter how tight the radius is it'll still be higher off the ground than I'd like. But more importantly, too wide to cross my wooden bridge. 

 

 

I am still going to use the information in this thread to bend/make the linkages for the brake. 

 

 

I'm thinking a set of spindles made of C channel ala @Achto is the best answer.

@OldWorkHorse was nice enough to make me up a plate that I'm going to use to raise the rear of the frame 4". 

With the large tires and that 4"  raise I'll be at around 20" or so from the bottom of the rear frame angle piece to the floor.

 

 

I'd like to get the front height to be about the same but it's going to be at least 2" taller...

 

The outside width across the rear is 40",+/-. 

The front has to stay 42", or less. Otherwise I can't cross the current bridge.

I still need to double check my measurements to be honest but if I use a stock 3/4 rod type spindle I'm going to end up two or four inches too wide....

 

So if I use a c type spindle I can adjust for both height and width..

I'm going to build a similar thing and weld the trailer stub axle right to the outside instead of a piece of 3/4 rod.

For mine I drilled a hole through the vertical portion of the C so that the spindle passes through it. It is only welded on the inside of the C, I thought this to be stronger than butt welding the 2 together. Plus it left a clean surface for the bearing to set against.

Yes sir. I'll be doing the same.

 

I'll most likely be welding the steering knuckle tab at the top instead of the bottom because it lines up better.

Hahahahaha I luv it, theres always a thousand and one ways to tweak, but always try to make a point of adding a grease point too. I find that is so important li8ke the ol days gone by......past years youd need a manual just to find all the grease points compared to today heheheheh, Like Studebaker LOL

Quite true quite true. Thanks for bringing that up. Luckily enough on this one the person who originally built the axle was nice enough to put a grease zerk in a nice outward location on each side.

The "torch" is just a handheld with an old black tank. I don't remember what's in it. 

 

I did try to bend a piece experimentally. 

The torch I have just doesn't get anything to do with red hot. 

I was able to bend it with a 3 foot piece of iron pipe and a large me for leverage. 

 

I found that the last 2" just before the bend was not quite straight. 

Perhaps a slightly smaller diameter and longer piece of pipe would work better. 

 

Ideally of course... More heat.  

 

 

Throw ya a few bricks together with a blowdrier or small fan EB!  make ya a temp forge. or even an inground hole forge. Nothin like a forge for heatin and bendin! I keep me a bucket of coal picked from the train tracks for just such an occasion, but hardwood or charcoal does well too.

I don't have any coal or charcoal but I've got all kinds of hardwood seeing as to how we live in a forest that's 70% beechwood.

I like the forge idea.   Just be careful with the bricks or stones.   They will explode if they contain moisture.

Definitely a valid point. We've had it happen while camping. That's one of the things that may possibly scare the snot out of you.
