1277 with 10 hp engine.

Recommended Posts

CB1993

Hello I recently purchased a 1277. It is my first. It is a 1277 I believe this model is supposed to have a 12 hp engine. Based on the engine tag I think I have a 10 hp engine. Could this be a replacement engine? I have attached some pictures. Thanks for any input.

:text-welcomeconfetti: to the :rs:  Looks like someone did some decal switching.    Do you have the tractor model numbers?

The only way I know to verify HP is to remove the head and measure the bore.    10 HP bore is 3.25     12 HP is 3.37

I believe the tractor tag is up under the dash plate on this model.

The K241S-46215A was used in the 1964 tractor model 1054.

Thats really interesting thank you for the info. I bought this tractor at an estate sale. Supposedly the old man that owned it, owned the wheel horse dealership in Indianapolis in the 50s and 60s.

Yepp. Clearly a 1277 tag.

It would be interesting to know if the engine really is a 10 or 12.

Either way you've got a very nice find there!

:WRS:  @CB1993 nice looking tractor you have there, at least it seems well taken care of, even if it's a 10hp.

Thanks for all this info guys. A little off topic but could any of you give me some guidance on what drive belt this tractor uses? The one on it is very dry rotted. This is my first wheel horse and first riding mower period. It runs like a champ. I'm a first time homeowner and planning on using it for mowing this summer. Any other tips on things to look for on a new to me tractor would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to change all the fluids, filters, and belts.

Another way to identify the block is on the PTO side. Behind the PTO it should be stamped just above the crank if it's a 301 or a 241. Ie 12 hp or 10 hp

Drive belt is 4L780. It was answered in your other thread.

most of the time you can trust the embossed numbers however, many don’t have the embossed model number.

additionally it’s very common to have a k301 block and it’s bored to the k281 spec.
the only way to truly tell is to pull the head and measure the cylinder.

Looks like you have a 1277 tractor    12 = HP    7= hydro    7= 1967

If the riveted engine tag is correct, it has a replacement engine from a 1054 tractor     10=HP  5= 4speed gear drive   4=1964

The 12HP engine decal may have been added to the 10HP engine.

Only way to be sure is to measure the bore.
