My Homemade Mid Mount Grader - Lets See Yours

Recommended Posts

Raposo

Hey guys, this is going to be my build thread for my mid mount grader blade. I am using a 42" dozer blade for the majority of the build that I got for free. Its missing the angle level handle and brackets, so I figured its a great candidate for this! Wanted to also have people post up mid mount grader blades they have building.

So far I have cut the A frame down to about 20" and have it welded together. I will get some pictures and post it up. Next I will be cutting the blade down to about 6" in height. and removing the trip springs and welding it solid.

Will this still mount like a snow blade?  Maybe replacing the springs with adjustment arms would be advantageous?

Yes, it will mount to the rear axle mounts like dozer blade.

I thought about that but I don't think I will have enough height since the blade will only be 6" tall or so.

I have a mid mount grader on my Commando 6 right now.  If you need any measurements...

You're welcome to post the thread where I did all the measurements on this one if you want as well

One thing I can't seem to find is when the factory blade is angled what is the clearance from the front and rear tires to the blade in both directions.

A guess would be somewhere close to a 30 deg. angle.

That's what I'm thinking. I think the degree of angle on the grader blade is about the same as the factory dozer blade.

I got a nice 50" laying here, if you need some measurements etc.

Also, what is every doing for replacement cutting edges for the dozer blades? I would like to add a slightly thicker and taller one to this mid mount i'm building. Just get some flat stock and drill it out?

Yes. Or if you want it more durable, you could go stainless or take it to the max and use hardox. That you might want to order with the holes in though.

Personally I would go stainless. Plenty strong, and will stay nice to look at.

Older factory mid-mount grader blades like what I have do not have a cutting edge.

I'd absolutely recommend the flat stock.

The entire blade is able to be flipped but that's the only chance you get until you add something yourself

I'd look at some 4140 pre hard steel for a cutting edge.  It wears well, but is still machineable.

Another choice would be some abrasion resistant steel.  Much harder to drill and cut than the 4140 pre hard, though.

Both of these should be available in bar stock from suitable for a cutting edge.

I had a 50” mid mount grader blade at one time and it did not have a cutting edge. However, the blade itself was probably 3:/8” inch thick so it was much heavier than a dozer blade.

Cut a large section out of the plow a frame and saved the rear section that has the reinforcements. That is what I’m going to use to mount to the rear plow frame. Next up is fit it under the tractor

This is roughly where it will sit under the tractor (obviously higher, it’s just sitting on the floor) You can see the diagonal line drawn on the card board will be the blade when it’s angled. I kept the same 21” dimension from the axle mount to the pivot pin found on the factory mid mount blade.

This sharpie line is about 7” tall. That is what I’m planning to cut the blade down to. Then I will run a piece of 1.5” square tube steel on top of the blade to box it in and stiffen it up.
