wmsue 4 #1 Posted November 12, 2020 My Charger Nine developed a slight knock a year ago and I've finally got the time to take it apart. It is an HH-100 Short block that I installed in the early 80's. It has never been apart before. I shut it down as soon as I heard the knock and haven't started it since. The oil was good with no metal filings anywhere. The engine has served me well over the years by plowing snow for me and all the neighbors. It has worked hard. Haven't used it to mow because the deck rotted out and I bought a 310-8 in about 1986 to use for mowing. Is there another engine that will bolt up and allow the hood to close? I will not be using it to cut grass, only to plow snow and haul a cart around. I do like electric start though. Is that the best route because I understand that parts for these old engines can be hard to find. If rebuilding is a better option, here are some of the specs I took after tear down. Piston measures 3.270 Bore measures 3.320 (3.312 is factory spec) I cannot feel a ridge at the top of the bore. There is discoloration (honing at the bottom of the bore, but no ridge either. end gap clearance is .049 top - .045 middle - .049 bottom Conn Rod - 1.375 Crank - 1.370 (spec is 1.3750 - 1.3755 Photos of the bore, crank, and rod are attached. I don't mind spending a few hundred to get it running again if that is the best route. Am I looking at a .010 oversize piston and rings? Can I get away with a std. connecting rod? Can I even find an oversize if I would need to get the crank reground? What would you do if you were in my situation? Thanks Bill
Achto 29,433 #2 Posted November 12, 2020 (edited) The old cast iron Techy's were not the worst engines, they could be a bit temperamental at times. Yours may be worth rebuilding. If it were my tractor I would be on the look out for a Kohler K241-10hp, K301-12hp, or K321-14hp to drop in. Let it be known that I am quite bias to Kohlers though. Putting a Kohler in would probably require a different key switch & some minor wiring changes. Might also need to alter the mount on the front of the drive belt guard. Stepney 2,354 #3 Posted November 12, 2020 I have a Raider 9, .. more or less the same, just a standard shift. I put a K301 Kohler in it, manual start, magneto ignition. Original key switch and all. Bolt holes line up just fine and so did the belt cover. The Teccy is a good engine but if/when the coil fails its no cheap date..
wmsue 4 #4 Posted November 13, 2020 Thanks for the input. I think I'll start looking for a Kohler 241 or 301 before I do anything else. Thanks again Bill

Thanks again Bill Don't pass up a larger HP K- series Kohler in good shape they are all the same size 10, 12, 14 and 16 HP. You do need one from a Wheel Horse for the manual clutch and the tapped oil pan for mounting.
