JCM 10,225 #1 Posted November 9, 2020 Spent the first night this fall in the cabin last evening. Did not think we would be able to light the stove because of the mild temps but it did cool off some so why not. Used the 418-A and the 4 wheeler to haul out the gear. A few pics included. Sunset through the trees and sunrise over the rooftop. Was nice to get away from the TV and news and go off Grid. 7 9 1

JCM 10,225 #9 Posted November 9, 2020 I would like to thank all of you that reacted to this topic it really does mean a lot to me. There is always a story behind my ambitions to seek something soothing to the mind, body and soul. For roughly 25 years I owned 2 camps 4 hours north of our southern Maine home and for various reasons it was inevitable that eventually they would need to move on to another owner. I was fortunate to find someone who would care for them as I did and because of that Patti and I have permission to use either the lake camp or woods camp with just a phone call. Those camps I hold dear to my heart and tho I miss them I know we have this cabin which eases the pain considerably and only takes a 5 minute walk. In 2014 things changed dramatically health wise and found myself very very close to not being here anymore, and after a long absence from my trade I found myself with yet another project, installing the frost posts with a pick and shovel in my hands along with another friend with a mini- excavator and I had absolutely no business in that trench, stubborn or slightly stupid I guess. I did hire a friend to frame this, but the majority of it was built by myself even the fieldstone veneer behind the woodstove. I have included build pictures but am missing some when we cleared the area to build. I figured you guys may like to see it in various stages. I think very highly of a lot of you on RedSquare even those I have not met mainly because we all have very similar interests. Last but not least PLEASE do not ever be Intimidated when your Doctor recommends the dreaded word Colonoscopy, it really isn't that much of a pain in the A%S, I almost lost my life but I was surrounded by way to many GREAT people including Patti foremost, my Doctors, nurses an many of you that are unaware reading this. Enjoy life. 2 1

We have 3 or 4 in our forest but none that wide. Pretty little Brook.
8ntruck 7,840 #12 Posted November 10, 2020 (edited) Nice place. Gives me inspiration for development of our hillside in Ky. Are the rocks in the wall behind the wood stove found items from the property? I'll bet a lot of them came out of the excavation for the footers. I second your thoughts about the colonoscopy. Inconvienent preperation? Sure, but the procedure itself, in my experience, is nothing more than a nice nap - and an excuse to loaf around for the rest of the day. JCM 10,225 #13 Posted November 10, 2020 Yes they are. I spent several years with the 417-8 and Kwik-Way FEL roaming the woods trying to find just the correct size for a small building. Cleaned them , a lot of them were moss covered which did look nice but thought they would be nicer to clean them and lay them in the sun spread out for some time to dry out before starting to lay them. I have done masonry work with brick but this was my first fieldstone job. Being a Plumber by trade it's nice to try something else now and then.
WHX?? 51,772 #14 Posted November 10, 2020 Gotta like the gas piping Plunge. Any plans for an addition? Just that I see it happen all the time. Personally I wouldn't ... I like small spaces in a love shack.... doesn't give the missus a chance to run away!

JCM 10,225 #16 Posted November 10, 2020 The only addition planned is a privy built to look exactly like the cabin. They are still allowed in Maine you just need to have a soil test done the same as if you were building a septic system. I have had the test done and all paperwork in order, just need to stop buying tractors so I can find the time to build it. We do have a small closet with a porta-potty for the Ladies.

Guessing not. The ladies cotton to that too....along with power. Again personally I could do with gas lanterns for lighting and a privy. Many a shack I have had we just did a milk can with a spigot afixed and set it on an old Junkers oil stove for a little hot water. JCM 10,225 #20 Posted November 10, 2020 (edited) No running water. Town said electric yes, water no. 75' from the brook so I went 85'. Usually don't need electric and if we do the Honda 2000 inverter does the job. Really would be nice to have the privy, just barely made it to the house Sunday at 5 30 am on the wheeler to the house in the dark with the high beams on. And that was before coffee. JCM 10,225 #24 Posted February 7, 2021 Headed out back yesterday with the 4 wheeler and plowed out the trail from the brook to the cabin for access and clean up to spend the night in the cabin. Have not had the plow on that in years, only takes seconds to connect and remove which is very convenient. Lit the Jotul 602 at noon and brought out what we needed for the night and had it up to 80 degrees in 3 hours then cracked a window eventually to get it to a comfortable temp for the night. Overall a nice mid- winter evening. Starlit night added with the snow and nice sunset added a nice touch. 1 1
