Ronnie Gray 1 #1 Posted November 8, 2020 Cannot keep hub from sliding in on axle. Does the bolt on the woodfurd key supposed to hold the hub from moving in and out? I’m new at this and appreciate any suggestions. It’s on a 1985 (I think) wheel horse 310-8 ron gray
JAinVA 4,638 #2 Posted November 8, 2020 (edited) In a word yes.On the later 1 1/8" axles WH installed 2 lock bolts in each hub.I think you have 1" axles in the 310.If you do not have the resources to do that mod to your hubs you might just grind a flat on the woodruff key to capture the locking bolt. That should stop the creep. ebinmaine 72,993 #3 Posted November 8, 2020 A little more time consuming but I'd remove the wheel/tire then take off the hub. Replace the woodruff key with a new one and also replace the set screw. While the hub is off check the keyway for excessive wear. One of the tricks I learned as a young'un is to tighten and loosen the set screw 3 times before leaving tight when done. If you use a wrench you'll see the screw goes in just a touch more each time. It gives better purchase for the coned seat of the screw. Please feel free to post pics and ask more questions.

Retired Wrencher 5,837 #5 Posted November 8, 2020 Ron good info above and use that. I also use blue lock tight on a clean bolt. With blue you can remove the bolt if you have to. Enjoy the tractor.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,522 #6 Posted November 8, 2020 From the 1978-79 service manual Rear wheel hub set screw torque 28-32 Ft. Lb. or 39-45 Nm What I do is retorque after a 1/2 hour of use, 1 hour of use and so on until I am confident everything is seated in. Just snug up the locknut because anything more tends to pull the set screw back out. Garry

daveoman1966 3,841 #8 Posted November 8, 2020 Don't thighten the 'set screw' too much...it may snap off, then you're really 'screwed'. Don't ask how I know this...
