C121 Auto won't keep constant speed??

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I "tried" to mow Monday evening with my spare tractor and discovered something pretty quick! If I don't keep one hand on the variable speed lever, this tractor wants to try to set a land speed record. :omg:

This is a 1979 C121 Auto that I'm finding has a few quarks!

The lever moves forward and no matter what, it goes to full speed in a matter of a 10 to 20 seconds. Is there a little "friction" device or something that is to keep torque on that lever?

I can see myself mowing over small trees or meeting my maker on the many oaks I have in this yard that would not be very forgiving.

Thanks!

Boovuc

PS...It mows real well real fast!

Although this is an excerpt from an "old" manual, it still can be applied to your newer tractor:

One of the most common issues you'll find with the DCL not holding it's position is a broken weld on the tab on the end of the pin that the DCL pivots on. The matching "inside half" of the tapered friction collar is keyed to this pin and must remain stationary in order for it to work. If the pin/key/collar can rotate with the DCL assembly then there is no friction to hold the desired speed setting.
