312-8 transmission into a 857

I know there was a thread or two on transplanting a 8 speed into an older frame, cant seem to find it. Wanting to see what modifications need made to make it fit, I'm certain that the brake rod set up would need changed around. If I remember correctly the tower/dash assembly needs notched out so the high low lever can move freely ?   Hmmm.  This is gonna be fun yet rewarding !

@pullstart has a rig or two that's been modified as such.

I had a 1267 that had an 8 speed in it.

You're correct about the brake rod being a little different.

I don't think think the dash tower will need to be touched at all.

An 8 speed in an older tractor works fine as long as you don't need to press the clutch on a regular basis like if you're going back and forth snow plowing. It's a little tough to keep adjustment perfect for that.

Really is an easy swap.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Don't forget lots of pictures!!

Yep, Putt Putt has an 8 speed.  I took it out of a C-101.  If you could find a 6 speed, the brake linkage stuff would be a direct swap I believe.  I have a 6 speed on the bench awaiting a swap into something but haven’t decided what yet.  The toolbox does need a hole or notch to accommodate the hi/low lever and otherwise everything bolts up.

In this link below, you can see the hole I put in the toolbox for the range control.  It may help you, but with the 857 I thought that area is fairly open?

I put a 8 speed in my 953, this may sound crazy but it works. I took the half with the hi low shifter and mated it with the other half of the original trans. Been working great for Years. This is the second time I've done this. I plan on Bringing my 953 to the plow days in a few weeks pullstart if you want to check it out.

I'd love to see pics of that.

Can't say it surprises me any that it works. Those transmission halves look like they would and obviously did!

What did you use for the differential?

I used a 8 pinion, had to grind some off the bull gear to make it fit, if I would've used the bevel gear diff it would've fit with no problems. The reason I did that was to get the brake in the right spot and the 953 has a different bolt pattern to its frame.

I put an 8-speed into my Commando 8, as others have done.

Mine was a literal bolt in, as I found a 5060 transmission which has the brake band in the same spot as the 3-speed. I did not have to change anything on the brake set-up.

The only thing you have to do on the dash is add a slot for the 2nd lever (hi-low).

I had more issues prepping the transmission prior to the install. I had to remove welded on hubs, find a new set of correct axles, remove a stuck hitch pin, and re-line a brake band.

Funny that this thread came up cause I was just working on my 857 yesterday that I had swapped a 6 speed in to it about 6/7 years ago.Only problem I have had is I cant get the brake to work to good going backwards works great going forward IDK what to do for it :confusion-confused:...The reason I was working on it though was because the float has sunk or the float needle is not shutting off the fuel and filling up the crankcase with gas:bitch:...

857 ... that I had swapped a 6 speed in

That effectively changes it to an 867.

Trina's 867 does the same with her brake in reverse.
