Toro 521 Snowthrower restoration

I wonder if any of you guru's could help me out with this one. I'm waiting for one more head bolt. The one with the head drilled and tapped for the muffler mount. It doesn't look like a stretch bolt like the rest, there's no shoulder on it.
I can certainly clean up this bolt and install it so I can finally get the engine running.
Would it make sense to just clean it up and install it and replace later? I don't think it would affect the head if I did so, but I'm not sure.
I do have spare head gaskets should it leak.

Anyone have any tips?

I'd think you'd be alright reusing it, and/or changing it later.  I don't think you'd have to change the gasket, just because you change one bolt.  But Hey, I've been proven wrong before. :hide:

That's pretty much what I was thinking...

Don't take my word as the be all end all but my small engine guy told me at one point that he's pretty comfortable using most OLDER head bolts two or even three times because they don't stretch anywhere near the same amount as the modern car engine bolts do.

Unless your engine rebuild manual specifically tells you NOT to reuse ANY of the head bolts I would go ahead and do it.

OK, thanks! I'm gonna go for it.
The main reason I replaced the head bolts is the hex was sketchy on several of them. I've wasted plenty of time in the past trying to remove broken/damaged head bolts from small engines. For the price it was a no-brainer!

It's alive!!!

Seems like I'll need to pull the carb again, there must be a piece of fly $hit I missed as she's surging without half choke. If that's not the case then a governor adjustment might be needed. Either way, she runs and sounds strong fo

She's done! almost

Just need to touch up the paint on the hardware here and there, sort out the carb issue which is still bugging me and she's good to go.

Everything else is working great. Auger engages nice and smooth, the drive will try to drag me across the driveway if I hold on tight.

Really pleased with how this project came out. Now what the heck am I gonna do with my evenings?
