Buttermore97 1 #1 Posted September 20, 2020 How do I disassemble the lift lever to replace the return spring on a 1960 wheel horse suburban
oliver2-44 10,781 #2 Posted September 21, 2020 Penetrating oil, time, patients and more penetrant are your friend. I happen to have a couple of Suburbans disassembled, so in this picture you see the rod inside the handle and a second set of parts laying outside of the handle. The spring goes inside the handle and the lower rod slides through it and the top rod with the nut screws it together and holds the spring in place. The long rod that sticks out the top has to be unscrewed from the nut that is welded to the top of the lower part. 60 years of brown rust typically have them fused together. One way is to remove the complete lift handle and put the bottom part in a bucket of diesel for a week or month. leave a vice grip clamped to the top rod and every few days try to give it a little wiggle. the 1st one I took apart the weld on the nut finally broke and left the nut attached to the lower rod. I had to cut the lower rod to get the nut out of the handle. Then make new pieces. the second one i took apart I let it soak in diesel. To remove the shorter lower rod slide it down and through the slow in the lift handle. The Spring item 37 (part #3624 $2.64 is still available from Toro. https://www.psep1.biz/arinet.asp?aribrand=TO#/Toro_Consumer/400%2c_Suburban_400_Lawn_Tractor%2c_1960/Parts_List_(front_End)/8d66480f-f1ba-44f2-9545-c393ffa3073c/d7debd92-aa4d-4edf-abb4-0c2bc9cdb286 Don't hesitate to reach out for any help you need, lots of friendly, helpful people here. @Racinbob can you add anything to help get this apart. @Buttermore97We would love to see pictures of your suburban 2

I also learned something. I didn't know that the lift rod had that nut it screwed in to. I didn't need to disassemble mine that far. Folks, pay attention to the first sentence " Penetrating oil, time, patients and more penetrant are your friend" If I know something is going to be a problem I soak it for days and sometimes weeks before I get aggressive with it and break something.
