Scott24 2 #1 Posted September 18, 2020 Hello, I have a 314-H, Model Number 73403 with a Kohler engine M14-601559. While trying to replace the spark plug module (a mouse chewed through the wire) I snapped off the left bolt head. I was able to drill it out and tap it. I then decided to go just a hair bigger and while tapping the new hole I broke the tap. I have tried different tap extractors as well as trying to weld a nut onto it, but have had no luck getting it out. I have looked for a new bearing plate, but it was discontinued a few years ago. I've gone so far as to look at replacing the engine and there does not appear to be an after market one. So now I think I need to look for a used motor or try and make another motor fit. Any ideas on where I might find a bearing plate, motor or how I might get the tap out would be appreciated.

8ntruck 7,833 #4 Posted September 18, 2020 A plunge EDM machine will be able to burn the tap out of the hole. Years ago, I saw an article about converting an inexpensive engraver into a tap burner. Don't remember where, though. Probably Popular Mechanics or Popular Science.

Material should not be a problem Paul. The EDM can do some amazing pin point machining.
WVHillbilly520H 10,376 #7 Posted September 19, 2020 @Ed Kennell ... Here is a "wire" EDM that I used to set-up program and run at the factory I learned machining in. VIDEO0045.mp4

They do show one in stock if the machine shop route doesn't work out for some reason. Thank you all for the feedback. Hopefully I can find a machine shop willing to take the time to help me out.
JoeM 8,337 #9 Posted September 19, 2020 I know you have said you have tried to weld a nut to the tap and that surly is material that is small and hard to weld. I have in the past been able to slide metal down along the flutes of the a broken tap, tacked a flat washer to that area and then a nut on top. Of course you at dealing with a #10 size ish screw. Also a little heat during extraction will help also.
Ed Kennell 41,959 #10 Posted September 19, 2020 Have you tried a tap extractor? https://www.ebay.com/i/264295132533?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-213727-13078-0&mkcid=2&itemid=264295132533&targetid=4580290572086399&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=&poi=&campaignid=403204655&mkgroupid=1227055191472610&rlsatarget=pla-4580290572086399&abcId=9300377&merchantid=51291&msclkid=3eb030e518ed1ac89f2a6f831b45a386
Scott24 2 #11 Posted September 19, 2020 JoeM thanks for that idea. I think the challenge will be in getting a piece of metal small enough to fit in the flute. Ed Kennel, I have tried a tap extractor although it may not have been a high quality extractor since I bent it some while trying to get the tap out. Thanks for the ideas.
