I'm having trouble with my belt keeps turning (with clutch brake in ) transmission grinding??

What size belt should I be using 1/2 or 3/8  wide

The transmission  turn so freely not sure how its going to stop spin no resistance?

am I missing something??

Not an RJ guy, but they will be around shortly to troubleshoot - you're in the right place!

AMC RULES

You do have a belt cover in place on that machine?

Welcome to the forum.  Bunch of good folks here.  Somebody will have the answer.

I am thinking along the same lines as AMC Rules.  There are belt guides inside of the drive belt guard that hold the belt off of the drive pulley when the clutch is pushed.  If those belt guides are broken or out of adjustment, or if the belt guard is not in place, the drive belt will still contact the drive pulley when the clutch is depressed.

Good luck.

Belt should be 1/2 w x 29"

Yes the belt guard should be installed because that's what guides the belt loop around the engine pulley. The belt must slack off the engine pulley groove so it doesn't spin.

Even with a belt guard they can be a little finicky to get adjusted right. If you don't have a belt guard, little belt guides can easily be made with 1/4" rod to guide the belt

I didn't have the belt guide on when testing it. I will try that .

Thanks

Here is a copy of the manual for the RJ. Be sure the belt you are using is a fabric wrapped belt. Some automotive belts are rubber edged belts and grab hard.

Here are a few pictures of how Wallfish used the rod on Howard's horse.

@Stepney Spenser, you should show or send a link of this post to your buddy Andrew. I saw @wallfish John saying something to him about these wire guides yesterday. A visual is often helpful.
