Ed Kennell 42,047 #4 Posted September 6, 2020 What TVA dam is this? Is it shut down for maintenance? I am surprised to see this activity in the tailrace of a hydro dam.
953 nut 60,083 #5 Posted September 6, 2020 There has been plenty of rain lately, can't understand why there wouldn't be plenty of water unless the are working on the next dam downstream..

Skwerl58 763 #7 Posted September 6, 2020 I also love to fly fish for trout locally in the Smith River, Philpott Dam feeds this river. I haven't been able to wade as much because the flow of the water has been increased on week ends for the other outdoor activities. I have been told to fish earlier in the day but for me I enjoy fishing the late afternoon and early evening from 3:30 -7:30. I understand the share your space deal but some do ruin a good fishing spot because they like to run the rapids into the larger holes where the fish congregate. I could get me a kayak but It is my choice not to.
Ed Kennell 42,047 #8 Posted September 6, 2020 Center hill is actually a US Army Corps of Engineer project. We, Voith Hydro, upgraded nearly all of the Corps, Duke Power, and TVA projects. https://www.army.mil/article/136024/Hydropower_model_tests_generate_positive_results_for_Center_Hill_rehab_project/https://www.army.mil/article/136024/Hydropower_model_tests_generate_positive_results_for_Center_Hill_rehab_project/ Most of the these projects required a field inspection of the existing hydro equipment and the manufacture of a homologous model that was used to develop the new turbine. I have many memories of the nearly 50 years I spent in these power plants. I might add, during the first 30 years, the goal was to develop turbines that could produce more HP at a higher efficiency w/o creating any cavitation pitting damage. During the last 20 years, the focus was on fish friendly designs and and methods of improving aeration of the water. Sorry to go off topic, But much of my working life was spent designing and testing methods of thru the runner aeration. Hopefully the efforts increased the oxygen level in the rivers saving some fish for the flyfisherman.

Its at the start of the foot hills before gatlinburg down theroad a piece. Lot of charm and a get away from the city! Now it seemed the city set in here. Im like you on the evening fish ! Especially when you get a good hatch flying! Here's a couple more shots from the other side of the dam.

I just hate seeing such a delicate system being tortured by this sort of thing. Trout or a very delicate creature. Its a great place to be and see an eagle now and then!
