417A not starting

Recommended Posts

I have a 417A with the twin Kohler. I don't have spark.  I have a new set of points and condenser. I've never installed these before, but I put the points on yesterday and i set the gap to .020. Still no spark. Bad coil? Not sure what else would likely cause this.

This has about 750 hours on it and it ran good a month ago. I use it as a plow tractor.

Is your PTO in the off position?

When you installed the points did you turn the engine over slowly to be sure the points gap is .020 at the furthest opening?

If you have a meter or test light, with the key in the "ON" position you should have 12 volts reading on the plus side of your ignition coil. If you don't have 12 volts there take a small jumper wire from the battery "+" to the coil "+" terminal and try to start the engine.

Let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the replies...

I will clean the points and try that test of the coil. Yes the PTO is in off position.

What do you use to clean them? I've read sand paper? What else?

Fyi, it ran fine a month ago.  When it didn't start, I put new points / condenser on that I had hoping it was the problem.  I need to set the points correct like @953 nut says.

Do not use sand paper or emery cloth.  They can leave grit behind that will cause pitting /burning.  Use a metal nail file or a new clean$1 bill.  (I undertand $100s do a better job but haven't tried it:P)

Got it running today! It ended up being the points / condenser in a way...

Let me try to explain...

I put new points / condenser in and it runs ONLY when the cap for the points is off or just not screwed down.... When I put the cap on, it shuts down.  I think that maybe the condenser wire is getting stretched and shorting or something.  The wire from the coil looks fine and is long enough where The wire doesn't stretch when The cap is on / tightened down.

The wire from the condenser is kinda short and I have to put pressure on it to get the screws to the cap on.

The condenser is usually connected to the "-" terminal of the ignition coil.
