Zombo22 0 #1 Posted August 13, 2020 Hey guys I have what looks like a real bad problem. I bought a 1997 14-38 HXL with a 14.5hp engine. I started it up it ran for a few seconds with some smoke coming out of the muffler and oil bubbling up out of the breather tube. I need some help I appreciate your input. Thanx
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,267 #2 Posted August 14, 2020 Welcome to the forum. Appears this model uses a B&S 28N707 and I know nothing about them. Some models use a fuel pump that can allow fuel into the crankcase when they fail so make sure the oil level is not overfull. There may be a check valve in the crankcase breather that can fail and cause the same problem. Garry
JimmyJam 542 #3 Posted August 14, 2020 Welcome to RedSquare!!! As Gary had mentioned, could the oil had been overfilled? Sounds like some kind of blockage that is causing the oil pressure to build a find ways to escape??? I am no engine guy, perhaps someone on this forum can help you! Best luck! oilwell1415 563 #4 Posted August 14, 2020 What color is the smoke? If it's black it's fuel from an overly rich mixture. If it's got a bluish/grayish tint to it it's oil. If the smoke is from oil and you have oil blowing out the breather tube it sounds like you've got either an overfull crankcase as mentioned above or an engine with a ring sealing issue that both burning oil and blowing by into the crankcase.
jhn9840 35 #5 Posted August 14, 2020 I had oil bubbling up the breather tube on a new B&S Intek on time. Ended up being a cracked ring on the #1 cylinder. jhn9840 John
Zombo22 0 #6 Posted August 15, 2020 Thanx guys your info was helpful so far the I found that fuel made its way down into the oil. It was a mess. I didn't even know that could happen. Eeesh
JimmyJam 542 #7 Posted August 15, 2020 Something must be cracked or broken that is not sealing up and containing gas from entering the crankshaft. I am not a engine repair guy. I am only guessing. Sorry I may not be any help, but there are plenty of engine guys out there! @953 nut, @fast88pu, @wallfish, ????

Check the float valve and the float itself.
Howie 899 #9 Posted August 17, 2020 Have seen that multiple time with those vertical Briggs engines. Have replaced a lot of the float valves and the brass seats. Not so many floats but have seen some bad ones. The seat is pressed in but can be pulled and replaced.
Redneckdavis 308 #10 Posted August 17, 2020 If it runs fine, then change oil and just add a fuel cut off in line. I've had quite a few carbs on diff things leak, but only when parked awhile.
Lagersolut 723 #11 Posted August 17, 2020 (edited) I put a brand new OEM carb on a Briggs motor for my Triy built Horse tiller years ago . Anything over 1/2 a tank gas pushes past the float bowl into the breather assembly . Carb works perfect other than that . as stated above installed a shut off run a it a minute walking it in the shed it's fine .
