M14 fuel pump problem

Recommended Posts

over40pirate

Anyone know if the cam that operates the fuel pump on a Kohler M14 engine ever wears out? Put 2 new fuel pumps on and no pumping. Its

getting gas to the pump.

They are import pumps, but tried 2 new ones. The last one lasted a few years. maybe the old one is good and cam is bad?

I felt the pump arm being pushed a bit as I installed the pump.

This is driving me nuts. Motor starts right up gas squirted in carb.

I haven't had any pump failures or cams going flat and the imported pump I've been running for over fives years now is trouble free; but I am not saying that doesn't happen.  What I have noticed with machines I have had come through my hands over the years is, is often over looked, some people double gasket the pump inadvertently or find some absurdly thick gasket to use.  That little bit will cause the pump to cause a no pumping status.  But of course I would check the fuel lines/filters/pump diaphragms for cracks as well.

WHX??

When installing make sure the lever is under the cam. Highly doubt the cam lobe would ever wear off.

Your camshaft is hardener steel so the likelihood of it being the problem is minimal. I have replaced the mechanical fuel pumps with electric ones and been very happy with them.

I replaced a mechanical pump with a vacuum pulse pump on my dad's tractor and it has been working great.

I have no idea on the electric ones, I’d be willing to try them. What do you set them at for poundage?

You can spend anywhere from 15 to 45

on one.look for one with around

3 to 4 psi. I mounted mine in front of the engine below the carb. I wired mine to

accessory side of the key switch. That way it would operate only while the key is on.
